Bill would allow state colleges to consider race

By The Associated Press

Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 4:16 p.m.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Assembly has approved a bill that would allow the state's public universities to consider race, gender and other demographic characteristics when they admit students.

The bill, AB2047, passed on a 44-24 vote Thursday and now moves to the Senate. It would apply to the University of California and California State University systems.

Democratic Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, who introduced the bill, says the legislation is needed to address the education gap in California. Currently, the state's black and Latino students trail whites and Asians in college attainment.

But opponents say the measure violates Proposition 209, a voter initiative that banned public institutions from considering race or gender in admissions or employment. They also say such ethnic classifications are outdated.

If the legislators really want to "address the education gap," they would encourage underperforming students to study harder.

Yep. More money is wasted on “higher education” than even sub-prime mortgages.
Many of us have thought of this. Yesterday Glenn Reynolds looked more in depth at the higher education bubble. I haven't checked to see if it's posted on FR, but in any case, here's the link.

Hey wait, I live in LA.... I am white and latin makes up 51% now so do I get into UCLA with my “C” average and tons of state $$$?

Here we have another latino elected politician acting in service of his race. Just like all these cities writing Arizona boycotts led by local Latino council people.

This is becoming a RAPID takeover of America.

The article even notes that CA voters banned such distinctions when they passed proposition 209 overwhelmingly. The elitist do not honor the constitution when it gets in their way.

Welcome to the California Constitutional Star Chamber Republic.

Great law from the non americans in CA gov’t. Now I would have to pay taxes to support schools that my kids would not be allowed to attend.

The California Assembly has approved a bill that would allow the state's public universities to consider race, gender and other demographic characteristics when they admit students.

Only a racist bigot would support this new law. If it would be wrong to permit state universities to require black and Hispanic applicants to meet higher admission standards than white and Asian students, then it is precisely as wrong to permit racism in the other direction. As I said, only a liberal would support this new law.

This ‘bill’ can’t remain the law of the land anyway, if the SCOTUS ultimately rules on it. What it does is buy the Left another decade of racism.

“What it does is buy the Left another decade of racism.”

And cheat thousands of qualified students out of a reasonably low cost education.

Currently, the state's black and Latino students trail whites and Asians in college attainment.

Let me see, what to do ... lower the college admission bar OR improve the the local schools that put out the under-performing students? This might be a real decision if it were not for the entrenched interest groups like bureaucrats, unions, 'civil rights advocates' and (maybe) 'community organizers' who have a vested interest in maintaining an underclass!

Since realpolitik over-rules logic and reason, watch the "Golden State Goose" continue to be butchered for short term political

In California’s legal structure voter passed initiatives are the equivalent of state Constitutional changes/mandates. But, California Dims don’t care too much about pesky things like Constitutions anyway, especially not when those legal restrictions are in THEIR way.

If they would relieve “minority” students from the “government plantation society” of public schools, allow vouchers, “charter” schools and any reasonable remedy from them, then more “minority” students would make it on their own to college, without “saving a special place” for them.

It is the liberal/progressive/Marxist education policies and agenda in the K-12 grades that create the disparities in “minorities” reaching preparation for college, much less preparation for success there once they are admitted.

So, IOW, CA has to admit 3-4 times as many blacks/hispanics as they do whites/asians in hopes that the numbers of blacks/hispanics who actually graduate will somehow approach the numbers of whites/asians who graduate.

Of course - makes perfect sense.

Not true. I have a degree, slugged through it. The institutional bias doesn’t come at the admission level for conservatives, at least not at undergrad.

This is a classic topic, racism. An article posted by a newbie to lure out unseemly commentts to make Freepers look bad. Is that your intent?

Holy paranoid Batman! While I’m sure this place does get plenty of individuals that come here to cause trouble (yeah, I’ve heard O’Reilley’s rants), did you happen to see the other posts I have made before jumping to an erroneous conclusion? As I stated before, my reason for posting this article is because I like to read the news stories on here, as well as the comments. I did not see this particular article and thought I’d repay the favor of someone informing me by posting something I didn’t see here. I’m sure a lot of people weren’t even aware of this...I know I wasn’t. I’m sorry if it’s considered a “classic” troll bait topic, but in that case, what topics WOULD be okay for a “newbie” (who has lurked on here for years btw) to post? Actually, if it WAS such a classic topic, surely I would have read about it from someone else rather than resorted to posting it myself. Again, I’m sorry if you think I’m some evil, manipulative progressive coming on here to snatch your words away and post on Daily Kos or some other garbage site, but not everyone that’s new has bad intentions if they happen to post a “hot topic”. Sheesh.

You gave a good description of why I have only posted one story the whole time I’ve been here. I also lurked for years before signing up and apparently stll didn’t do it right according to other Freepers. Don’t apologize to me. I don’t run the place.

Hey, if you have a good article to post, why not? Don’t worry so much about what others think if you aren’t a trouble maker. There are always some people on a message board that think they’re big wheels, I moderated one (not political) for 7 years. In the end the only ones who really count are those that can ban ya ;)

They do it now, anyway. They set aside a percentage in impacted majors, they make deals to take a certain percentage from picked high schools. They have lots of ways around current law. This will just make what they already have been doing for years...legal.

What part of “Equal Protection” do these liberals not understand? Once again, the Democrat Party lines up in opposition to the Constitution of the United States of America.
