Elton John Performs for Rush Limbaugh Wedding

I can’t stop asking myself how did Elton John,gay pop icon, ended up performing at at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding.

Anyway, the act took place in Palm Florida on Saturday night.The guests included celebrities such as Fred Thompson, Sean Hannity, Bush adviser Karl Rove, golfer Tom Watson and Rudolph Giuliani. Did i forget to mention it was a 400 guests wedding?

Limbaugh and Rogers met six years ago at a charity golf tournament. There is a 20 years difference between the two but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for them. Kathryn Rogers said she is “sometimes not able to relate to the average person my age.”

I’m guessing Elton John couldn’t help it and went for the million bucks. That is the reported $1 million payday for Elton John. But still , having a gay guy performing at your wedding is a bit ..awkward.

Here's my take, as a former professional piano player and singer who can perform at least 50 of Elton's songs.

I despise the guy's brain-dead leftist politics. I don't care that he's gay. Today, at 62, the famous high tenor range is long gone.

But give the man his due. At his creative peak, from around 1970-73, Elton John wrote some of the most interesting and complex pop music ever played on the radio. And as a performer, virtually nobody could touch him. People will still be listening to songs like Levon, Tiny Dancer and Your Song long after we've all shuffled off this mortal coil.

I really did think he was very conservative now I know he is not my kind of conservative.

It may be nothing more than a coincidence, but the conservative movement has done nothing but go downhill since Rush arrived.

Fair enough - in the end music is music and good music is good music.

Speaking personally, EJ was never *my* cup of tea, but I have enjoyed a few of his songs. I’m passionate about Ray Davies and the Kinks and I would make your comments about his/their music. But I know full well that puts me in a fairly small minority. But in a way, that’s what makes it fun!

I also think I’m more of a guitar guy than a piano guy, and I think that can make all the difference. I once had a long debate with another FRiend, on the merits of Billy Joel. His thesis was that Billy Joel’s music was everything you say EJ’s music is. I didn’t share that view, but like I say, give me a good guitar riff and I’m happy. Piano music - doesn’t always work for me.

I’ve seen Elton John and Billy Joel perform a number of times, both separately and together. My impression is that Joel could definitely hang with Elton as a rock pianist - but not as a vocalist - when both men were in their prime.

Joel is also an interesting and gifted songwriter. I’m a fan.
