The well has been capped, more or less. BP engineers Thursday night guided a containment dome onto the hydrocarbon geyser shooting from the Gulf of Mexico oil well -- a desperate and iffy attempt to capture the leaking oil and funnel it to a ship on the surface.
It was not an elegant operation. Furious clouds of oil escaped the "top hat." Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident commander for the spill, called the development a positive step but said, "It will be sometime before we can confirm that this method will work and to what extent it will mitigate the release of oil into the environment."
It was a day crammed with engineering drama. First, BP used robotic vehicles and a pair of giant shears to cut a damaged pipe a mile below the gulf's surface. The result simplified the whole arrangement at the sea floor: Instead of spewing from multiple leaks in a tangle of bent pipes, the oil and natural gas surged in a single plume from what looked like a deep-sea smokestack.
Then came the dome, lowered by cables, guided by robots, illuminated by lamps in a world without natural light, and carrying with it the hopes of countless engineers and pretty much the entire Gulf Coast.
Nothing has gone according to plan in the subsea environment as, on the surface, the oil has hit more than 100 miles of Louisiana shoreline. After brushing a barrier island in Alabama, it is poised to tar the white sand beaches of the Florida Panhandle. The area of the gulf closed to fishing is now larger than the state of Florida.(continued)

The critical thing here is to not let the enviro-Nazi’s use this to create a “Three-Mile Island” event.
We need the oil. We’re in the deep waters of the Gulf because of over-regulation and environmental fear mongering.
The key here is to accurately assess the technical aspects (we’ve learned a lot) & the political aspects.
These are Democrat & Obama cronies who were given a pass. Obama knew within 24 hours the seriousness of the leak and did nothing for 12 days plus.
We need to keep drilling - move it back to land. Add nuclear power and America is all right again (after ousting the Dems from Congress).
“This is what a joy it will be when the Chinese and Russians start drilling in the Gulf. Their reputations on being stellar stewards of the environment and all.”
But Obummer won’t “permit” it! His Toadies said so...

Well, if he’s going to get the blame then he has to get the credit when it’s complete.
Can’t have it both ways.
I'm no engineer, but it sure as heck looks like the problem is getting worse, not better.
I missed that bit of news. I'm no longer "in state" (now in Washington state), and although I try to keep some tabs on Louisiana happenings, I "do" miss a lot.
"(Call me a skeptic, but I dont trust the administration, the media or the environmentalist wackos.)"
Thee and me, sister. Thee and me.
The truth is not to be found in any of them, except by accident, or when it serves their agendas. They are all REALLY GOOD at telling part of the truth, though, to give their positions the appearance of "truthiness".
Not at all. If you compare the apparent velocity of the escaping oil to previous shots from days ago, it is MUCH less, so they are definitely catching a lot of it.
And that will increase as they implement the second step, which is to attach a second riser line to the manifold originally set in place to inject the mud, and begin to capture oil that way also.
I disagree. The stuff coming out now is barely moving by comparison.
Malarkey. One million gallons per day would be 24000 barrels per day, which is well outside the maximum estimated flow of the well.
I've don't doubt that he totally misread what is was seeing which is why SOMEBODY should be telling us that is going on down there.
I agree with you about the interviews, lol.
Where I completely agree with Cooper is the almost complete lack of timely information from anyone in the know. It is almost like BP and Gov do not give a damn about keeping us (American people) informed.
June 4 (Reuters)
BP Plc.s (BP.L) (BP.N) containment cap over its stricken Gulf of Mexico well is now collecting about 1,000 barrels per day, the top U.S. official overseeing the cleanup effort said on Friday.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN0411150820100604
The collection rate is a small portion of the 19,000 barrels per day that the U.S. government has estimated could be gushing from the well,
*** but it should increase as BP closes vents to trap more oil ***
Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told reporters in a conference call.
Sometime later today well probably be able to get an approximation of how much oil we are capturing, Allen said.
2 out of 3 belong to BP, but BP should have never replaced the mud with sea water knowing that natural gas was seeping in.
Well that is my take, hopefully we will find out what happened so we can prevent the same in future wells. I'd also like to know why the BOP it not work!
The oil is about 2 miles down (3 if you count the sea) so oil temp would be approx 140-150F.
See post 89. When you take a gas that's under extreme compression and allow it to expand (like when it exits the pipe), it becomes very cold.
OK, I'll bite, what is the view from the "Right"?
