With five months to go before the general election, a new poll finds that Republicans have opened their widest lead yet when it comes to which party voters prefer this fall.
Gallup's generic congressional ballot finds that the number of voters who say they will vote GOP has jumped to 49 percent, compared with 43 percent for Democrats.
That's not only the biggest lead Gallup has recorded for the GOP this election cycle, it's the largest lead Republicans have ever had in the poll, which Gallup has run since 1950.
Why are Republicans surging?
According to Gallup, the GOP gained 3 percentage points in the poll over the last week, while Dems fell 4 points. All of this happened as President Obama's approval rating took a hit, especially with his handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Gallup puts Obama's approval rating at 46 percent — not exactly in George W. Bush territory, but low for this White House.
No doubt critics will question how much a generic poll really reveals about what might happen in November. After all, it's often better to break down races locally for a more comprehensive picture of how the midterm elections might go. But generic ballots are very good at telling us where voter sentiment is nationally and how enthusiastic people are — or aren't — about the political parties.

We still got some primary picks to sort out.. but if the GoP can stay the heck out of the way instead of trip itself up, they might actually come out of the surge on top..
Really big. I’ve been working with Americans for Prosperity & the local GOP. AFP sponsored a couple of initiative measures & really worked to get signatures & get out the vote. When it was all over, we found out that there was an absolutely terrible turn-out by Republican voters. And we have vote by mail! They couldn’t even bother to put a stamp on a ballot. I’m really discouraged & have no great optimism about November. :-(
Still plenty of time for them to blow it.

Yes, the only ones who can screw this up are the Beltway RINOs. And don’t put it past them to do it deliberately. Too many of them are quite comfortable with their minority status and their perks. They will cause us much more grief in the end than the Democrats.
I think Bobby Jindal and Chris Christie are responsible for the point bump. Heroes.
This is a very optimistic thread....well, up until the part after the headline...
GOP is leading because the RAT Party represents MARXISM at its worst. Many in the GOP are still to the left of center and not one in hundred is to the real right.
It’s barely June... that’s a long ways away. Most folks aren’t paying much attention to polls or candidates... but I do feel a little better than I did a months ago.
Despite their best efforts, I don't think it will work this November.

Riding a wave of unhappiness among independents, Republicans have increased their lead over Democrats in the preference poll for Congress, the Gallup organization reported Wednesday.
Republicans were preferred over Democrats by 49% to 43% in the generic vote in which those surveyed were asked to pick a party rather than a candidate. It is the largest lead by Republicans in the 2010 midterm election year, according to the polling organization.
The results are based on telephone interviews of 1,594 voters between May 24 and 30. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
The GOP's continuing strength in the generic ballot suggests a strong showing in the congressional battle this year, though it is unclear whether Republicans can recapture either chamber. In general, the party out of power runs strongly against the president's party. The latest results coincide with a general drop in approval for President Obama, according to most polls.
It’s going to be a long summer.
Unfortunately, we also know how “accurate” these polls tend to turn out. While I have no doubts that many in the US are beginning to wake up, and that voter sentiment is turning rabidly against the “establishment” and Democrats who are literally killing this nation - we also know that many elections are easily stolen. Al Franken is one glaring example I can think of. We cannot sit by and get complacent (just as the Republican model generally turns out).

Hopefully enough people have been alerted to the Alinsky/Chicago way tactics employed by the left. If it aint close, they can’t cheat.
I’m not surprised there wasn’t high primary turnout. That has nothing to do with November.
The Democrats were climbing, but they’re back down. I think that the BP fiasco could be their Katrina.
