Scientists say a more powerful Katla volcano is 'close to failure' LONDON - A second, much larger volcano in Iceland is showing signs that it may be about to erupt, scientists have warned.
Since the start of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption, which caused cancellations of thousands of flights in Europe because of a giant ash cloud, there has been much speculation about neighboring Katla.
An initial research paper by the University College of London Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction Analysis of the seismic energy released around Katla over the last decade or so is interpreted as providing evidence of a rising ... intrusive magma body on the western flank of the volcano."

An April 17 NASA image took place at Eyjafjallajokull to the west and Myrdalsjokull ice cap, beneath which slumbers the mighty Katla volcano, to the east.

Scientists say a more powerful Katla volcano is 'close to failure'Uh, from the point of view of the vulcano, an eruption would be a success, no?

A solar wind stream flowing from the indicated coronal hole could reach our planet on or about May 31st.

"We conclude that given the high frequency of Katla activity, an eruption in the short term is a strong possibility," the report said. "It is likely to be preceded by new earthquake activity. Presently there is no unusual seismicity under Katla."However (comma)(pause)…

High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras tonight. A coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading for Earth and it could spark geomagnetic storms when it arrives on May 27th or 28th. The following preview comes directly from the geographic South Pole........................................................

Thanks and today 7.2 EQ -VANUATU Per USGS...........Level 3
6.1 JAPAN
5 May-11 May 2010
On 11 May the Vanuatu Geohazards Observatory reported that, following an assessment of Yasur during 26-27 April, activity from the volcano remained high. Strong degassing and ash emissions from all three active vents were noted. Ash fell on the E and W parts of the island. New bombs were deposited around the crater rim and in areas near the vents. Explosions were heard and seen from surrounding villages. Satellite imagery and seismic data confirmed strong degassing and explosive activity. The Vanuatu Volcano Alert Level (VVAL) remained at 2 (on a scale of 0-4).

the good news is, most of us can actually pronounce the name of this volcano
To: ghost of nixon
Again, more bad news. Eruptions of Katla coincide with years without summer, famine, disease, etc.
Still, it's Hekla (further North) that's credited pretty much with The Dark Ages, The Greek Dark Ages, Even more Dark Ages, and lots and lots and lots of bad stuff.
