I have been monitoring the live feed of the "Top Kill" apparatus from BP.com and after about three hours there is a definite change of events down there.
For the first couple of hours we could see several views of a very complex device rocking around in clear water.
Now there is gushing of what I presume is the "mud" plumeing.
We may get some incite as to progress soon.
BP and the rest are performing ASTOUNDING feats of design, engineering and logistics. I think probably unsurpassed by any endeavor outside of the development of the A-bomb in WWII. Despite BP's (or somebody's)original screwups, I have to give them credit where due.
"And that would mean another 60 days or more of oil flow until they are completed and functioning."
Not necessarily. I suspect if the "top kill" doesn't work, they will extend the "pump and capture" process to the other big leak point further down the riser pipe. Yes, some oil will continue to spill, but much, much less than now.
Cut to the chase, it’s Bush’s fault.
Or the ‘sturring wheel’ on the truck....
Well, the part I cant grasp is, if they can cram a hose into the hole to pump in mud, can't they instead let the oil flow up through the same hose?
whew... clear again. Seems to me the velocity is stronger than it was earlier this evening.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
no it s 2.9 million bpd. i red.
Watching the plume earlier, it really seemed to come from such a clear point it’s hard to believe a pipe couldn’t be positioned over it to take up more of the flow but apparently it couldn’t.
As for the mud stopping the flow, they said they had to inject it downward with enough force to stop the oil flow.
I’m not any expert but it sure looks like plumes are forcefully coming through the mud. Could it be natural gas and not oil?
Digital intuition, and this feed.
Well, they have succeeded in muddying the waters.
Thank you for your responses to this and my other questions. Excellent thread.
A number of prophetic sources are saying this problem is going to be a lot bigger of a problem than most people think.
God have mercy.
Thx Thx.

Ah, riots...

It depends on the type of cement and chemical additives they use. Hydraulic cement sets up quick, I wonder if this is what they use
Is there any basis for the discussion of this mud and cement “setting up”/ What I’ve read is they have to inject it downward forcefully enough to stop the pressure flow, and that does not appear to be happening.
But hey if it’s going to harden, good. Thought I also read that seeing a mud geyser didn’t necessarily mean failure.
Shouldn’t our brilliant government be on live explaining all this?
Nope. I don't know who's putting out those numbers, but they are bogus.
see post 76 for a good pictorial of what the structure looks like and the topkill effort. They are pumping mud and eventually cement from well below the leaking pipe. You just have to hope that the integrity of the existing structure is still okay.
A really good explanation of what is going on, and subsequent options if it fails, is available at:

Hmmm... maybe that congressman from Cynthia McKinney’s old district?
You know, the guy who thought Guam would tip over if we sent more of our troops there?
The BP man on the scene gave a briefing earlier and said that the color and velocity of the flow would fluctuate and could not be used as a determing factor in gauging the success or failure of the topkill effort. They will know within 24 hours if it worked.
Thankfully, it looks like the weather has been cooperating. We need to pray that it continues.
