The Obama administration in a brief to the Supreme Court has backed the Vatican's claim of immunity from lawsuits arising from cases of sexual abuse by priests in the United States.
The Supreme Court is considering an appeal by the Vatican of an appellate court ruling that lifted its immunity in the case of an alleged pedophile priest from Oregon.
In a filing on Friday, the solicitor generla's office argued that the Ninth Circuit court of appeals erred in allowing the lawsuit brought by a man who claims he was sexually abused in the 1960's by the Oregon priest.
The unnamed plaintiff, who cited the Holy See and several other parties and defendants, argued the Vatican should be held responsible for transferring the priest to Oregon and letting him serve there despite previous accusations he had abused children in Chicago and Ireland.
The solicitor general's office, which defends the position of president Obama's administration before the Supreme Court, said the Ninth Circuit improperly found the case to be an exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, a 1976 federal law that sets limits on when other countries can face lawsuits in US courts.
"Although the decision does not conflict with any decision of another court of appeals, the court may wish to grant the petition, vacate the judgment of the court of appeals and remand to that court for further consideration."
... the Vatican plans to argue that Catholic Dioceses are run as seperate entities from the Holy See, and that the only authority that the Pontiff has over bishops around the world is a religious one...

***Are Catholic priests no longer citizens of this country? Are they required to give up their citizenship upon entering the priesthood, thereby making them exempt from prosecution for crimes violating US law against US citizens committed on US soil?***
Certainly helps to explain the Roman Catholic fascination with legitimizing illegal aliens now, doesn’t it?
It certainly is easy to see who has and has not done their homework before putting their foot in their collective mouths. Reread the original article and post number 41 and see if you can still make that statement with a straight face or with honest eye contact.
So which one speaks with correct understanding, Pious IX or Chaput?
They both do. You see, like the mistakes of the anti-Catholics in taking Scripture, the Catechism and now the proceeds of the First Vatican Council in snippets and excepts out of the context of the entire document, you cannot hope to understand the meaning based on a sole excerpt. YOPIC (Your Own Personal Interpretation of Catholicism) isn't what defines the Church.
The citation bandied about by Pope Pius IX was part of the First dogmatic Constitution on the Church of Christ which was developed in the First Vatican Council which took place in 1869 - 1870. It rightfully stated that with respect to Catholic dogma the pope is the supreme power and authority.
“It rightfully stated that with respect to Catholic dogma the pope is the supreme power and authority.”
“discipline and government” of the churches is not dogma?
Doesn’t quite sound like “autonomous” dioceses and a “confederation” does it?
I just can’t do the mental contortions necessary to think up is down and down up at the same time.
Allow me to help you with that homework Natural Law.

That's no way to talk about your church....
This is a perfect example of why intelligent, honest discussion is not possible with those whose minds are closed and their eyes blinded by hatred. In response to my admonishment about taking a section out of context the response I get back is an even smaller out of context excerpt.
News flash, the actual state and teachings of the Catholic Church are not defined or changed by YOPIC (Your Own Personal Interpretation of Catholicism). YOPIC may change you, it certainly changes what people think of you, but it cannot and will not ever change what the truth that is the Catholic Church.
You are free to continue to spew falsehoods and hatred, but spare me the condescension of offering me an opportunity to affirm your apocryphal Protestant propaganda.
I knew that sooner rather than later I would hear that familiar buzz.
None of that passes the "so what test". How about you do a little constitutional law homework and tell me what the following provision within the 14th Amendment means in the context of illegal immigrants:
"nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
Are you denying that persons both legally and illegally in this country have basic human rights and certain legal protections against violence and theft?
Are you denying that there are legal paths to citizenship and legal recourse available to persons both legally and illegally in this country?
Are you denying that God cares just as much for persons both legally and illegally in this country?
Sounds to me that you are pretty close to declaring illegal immigrants untermensch.
Now, now, no one hates you here. It’s just that when you offer up your opinions as fact someone is sure to call you on it say what you will.
And admonishment doesn’t work either but thanks for giving it your best.
FYI - Condescension is a show of disdain and superiority in which the condescending person patronizes, or considers himself superior and "descends" to the level of, the disdained person. Spare me, even your premise of superiority is false.
Funny - I thought I heard the sound of reeducation camps under construction just now.
A religious issue Obama can support.
You have proven nothing beyond your ignorance. Constitutionally all persons within the jurisdiction of the US have basic legal rights. It is not legal to rob, rape, imprison, or enslave anyone simply because they are illegally in the country. To declare any person within the jurisdiction of the us outside the legal protections of the law is simply asinine. I do see a pattern here; Protestants selectively interpret Scripture, the Catechism AND the Constitution as it meets the needs of how the "feel" about any given topic. That sounds pretty liberal to me.
BTW - The sites you posted were sites that ensure that these basic rights are recognized and enforced.
Without due process? Don't try to play word games, you are not that smart.
