The Senate voted 59-39 on Thursday to pass the bill, the chief aim of which is to more-heavily regulate the financial industry. The bill now goes to a conference committee in the House of Representatives, where differences between the House and Senate versions will be ironed out.
The bill, if it becomes law, would create the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection and empower it to gather information and activities of persons operating in consumer financial markets, including the names and addresses of account holders, ATM and other transaction records, and the amount of money kept in each customers account.

...and the liberal privacy freaks say nothing.
Remember the days when Bush was in office and the left would go hysterical when this stuff was done?

Police state...
Seriously folks, this is getting nonsensical.
They want every shred of evidence they can get their grubbies on, just in case you ever do something wrong.
What the hell would a warrant be used for in the future?
Police departments don’t even get them to conduct no-knock raids now. At least some don’t.
I will restate, I do not approve of cameras in public either.
These goons, and that’s just what they are, are going way beyond the pale these days.

And, once again, where is this information in the major media? Why isn't the GOP putting out press releases and making statements about what will happen to ordinary citizens and their formerly private lives?

Yeah, thanks Scott Brown, you miserable turncoat...just the kind of politician we didn't need - especially since you were convinced by the likes of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and my absolute favorite idiot Kerry. You have failed your supporters by not doing the right thing. You failed yourself by not having the courage of your convictions...whatever were you thinking of? Now you are a member of the triplets of New England. Good grief.

Not that I don’t believe they had access to this all along, but now the outright codification of this socialist bilge is outrageous.
Time to start dealing in cash only, I guess.

I was just wondering how much a government official could make selling this information? I know when they gave the FBI direct access they were spying on relatives, ex-wives, etc.
Just think what a criminal could do with this information, which would be highly likely given the Federal Government's track record on computer security.

No. Because as CNS sometimes does, they've taken some cheeky creative liberties with the bill's language - and some would argue they didn't even have to. Beware of strangely placed quotes and ellipses (though they forgot them here.)
CNS: "The bill, if it becomes law, will create the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection and empower it to gather information and activities of persons operating in consumer financial markets..."
Here is the actual language from S.3217...
COLLECTION OF INFORMATION.In conducting research on the offering and provision of consumer financial products or services, the Bureau shall have the authority to gather information from time to time regarding the organization, business conduct, markets, and activities of persons operating in consumer financial services markets. In order to gather such information, the Bureau may...
CNS left out the world "services" which, depending on whom you believe, makes a mammoth difference (or not). I tend to think it DOES make a difference - you and I are consumers, not in the "services." We shall see... like someone said upthread, the feds have had any and all this info probably anyway all along.

They're still busy screeching about all the liberties we lost during the Bush presidency. So far, there is no sign yet that they are at all concerned about the very real loss of freedoms we're going through now.
