Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic candidate for the Senate, has apologized for exaggerating his history of military service.
"At times when I have sought to honor veterans, I have not been as clear or precise as I should have been about my service in the Marine Corps Reserves,'' Blumenthal said in a statement e-mailed to the Hartford Courant late Sunday. "I have firmly and clearly expressed regret and taken responsibility for my words."
"I have made mistakes and I am sorry. I truly regret offending anyone,'' Blumenthal added. "I will always champion the cause of Connecticut's and our nation's veterans."
SNIP
Blumenthal sent an apology to the Courant after the newspaper asked his campaign on Sunday afternoon if one would be forthcoming. Along with the Courant, some veterans groups and other Connecticut politicians had urged Blumenthal to apologize.

lol he still cant say he lied
Pack it in Dick,it’s over.
An apology for dishonesty is not acceptable; it just makes liars more careful.
Is CBS actually covering this?
No, this fine democrat candidate must be allowed to proceed with his candidacy. After all, that’s why pencils have erasers, right?
Too little, too late—and the phonies he lined up with him at a VFW Hall (more on the CT VFW’s response on that later) need to apologize as well—IN PERSON.
Intentional and deliberate lies are not simply mis-speaking. They reflect improper and impaired judgement.
That is precisely what is not needed in Congress.
He did not ‘exaggerate’. He lied.
"I apologize from the bottom of my heart for lying about my military service and for stealing the valor of genuine Vietnam combat veterans. I did so strictly for political expediency and to try to get myself elected, and this was a totally unacceptable lapse in judgment. I therefore resign my office as Attorney General and withdraw my candidacy for the US Senate."
...is not accepted.
Wait a minute, weren’t the talking points that he ‘misspoke’ or was ‘misinterpreted’?
ANd it was a sick lie...he said he served in VIETNAM...that is not an exaggeration, and it is MORE than a lie when placed in the perspective of why he said it (to get votes). He is pathetic...and like ALL DEMOCRATS, he has no idea what service really means, marine reserves or not.
Blumenthal reminds me of sports fans who talk about how “we” won a championship as if they were on the field making the winning score.
Horse puckey.
"Misstatements" are easy to make (especially when publicly speaking) and easy to correct: You fumble a word or say "Shirley" when you meant to say "Charlotte" or something like that. We all do that; we say "oops, I mean 'Charlotte:' " - nobody cares, if they even notice.
Saying "when I returned from Vietnam" when the truth is "I served during the Vietnam War" is NOT a misstatement. It is NOT an "unclear" statement. It is NOT an "imprecise" statement - it is very precise.
It is an INACCURATE statement. Given that he made NO attempt to correct it until he got called on it, I have to put it in the LIE category.
Hilarious! The guy is even intentionally misleading in his apology, pretty much completely qualifies him as a Democratic Politician.
not accepted dick
Don’t remember where I saw it, but the best line I heard on this fraud is “Jane Fonda had more time in Viet Nam then DICK Blumenthal.”
Oliver North:
“Jane Fonda has more time on the ground in Vietnam than Blumenthal.”
