A huge wealth gap has opened up between black and white people in the US over the past quarter of a century a difference sufficient to put two children through university because of racial discrimination and economic policies that favour the affluent.
A typical white family is now five times richer than its African-American counterpart of the same class, according to a report released today by Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
White families typically have assets worth $100,000 (£69,000), up from $22,000 in the mid-1980s. African-American families' assets stand at just $5,000, up from around $2,000.
A quarter of black families have no assets at all. The study monitored more than 2,000 families since 1984.

If you sort people by behaviors such as valuing education, not having children out of wedlock, staying out of alcohol and drugs, having a strong work ethic, etc, you can predict where they will be in life far more easily than if you look at their melanin.
First of all, everybody knows that the white man is the devil and is trying to keep blacks down.
Second of all, ever look at the graduation rates in the inner cities??? It ain’t cool for the bruthas to be actin all white n sh_t. So they drop out of school and shoot at each other to protect “their” street corner???.....not a good strategy for getting ahead in life.
Great post.
So your "class" is no longer determined by how much money you have? Learn something every day.
OK
And don't forget grills, we should all have the grills we want.
Does that mean that black families don't get and money or does it just mean that they don't save any money?because of racial discriminationRacial discrimination hasn't increased in the past generation.
You didn’t ask me why the real estate values are low.
I believe you have a similar problem in African countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the Congo. When blacks regained power, they shunned everything “white” - the leaders, the landowners, and even the economic infrastructure put in place. They believed that because white people did “bad” things, that anything and everything white people thought of or did was bad as a result. Therefore they turned free-market capitalism to communism, the value of education and civilized society into the value of marrying 14 year olds and chopping off women’s clitorises.
I can’t remember, was it Thomas Sowell or someone bright and pithy like him who noted that it was virtually impossible to be below the poverty line in this nation if you:
1. graduate high school
2. stay out of prison
3. don’t use recreational drugs
4. don’t have children until you marry
I thought there were five points but I can only remember four.
Anyway, as we all know, the black culture in America fails tragically on all the points above. Kudos to those who break the mold, but sadly, most don’t.
If anyone knows the cite for the above info, I would sure appreciate it. It comes up a lot and I’d like to save it in my files.
OK
It has been true of Appalachia since the 1920s. The cause is the same, a culture
that suppresses aspirations for self-improvement. Friends of ours taught advanced math and science classes at Spencer, WV, and were dismayed to see their best students decline to go to college, or even make the effort. The cultural inertia is tremendous. As on the Indian reservations, the parents are content to see their children continue the listless lives of the local community. They don’t want to “lose” their children to modernity. The same attitudes, I submit. prevail in the urban ghettoes.
The audience asked a man how long he'd been homeless... "5 years or more". They asked him what he did for a living. He said... "nothing". They asked him how long he hadn't had a job... "5 years"...
The audience members started to get up and walk out in disbelief.
I worked for a guy once who had a little saying about this. The guy was black BTW. He said if you took all the money in America and equally distributed it to everyone, and waited 5 years, that after 5 years, the people who were poor before the money was redistributed woulg be poor again, and ditto for the rich.
Yet he STILL voted for Obama.
Whites are 10 times richer in the UK then?
There is no question whites are far richer than blacks in the UK. Heck I lived in the UK for years.
Instead of trying to promote the ‘America is racist” spiel that The Guardian has been pushing for decades, maybe they should take a closer look at home, and deal with their own race problems.
It’s interesting that people, despite color, can achieve if they have good work habits, a stable family home, and a desire for education.
Look at the Barber brothers. Here is Tiki’s bio:
http://www.notablebiographies.com/newsmakers2/2007-A-Co/Barber-Tiki.html
“Their parents divorced when the twins were four, and the boys never really saw their father. Geraldine Barber worked hard to raise her sons. She held such jobs as transcriptionist, receptionist, and inventory company tracker, and spent 20 years working at the Virginia Skyline Council of Girl Scouts, moving from office manager to assistant executive finance director. Despite the doctor’s earlier warnings, the twins began playing football in elementary school. They were star athletes at Roanoke’s Cave Spring High School, where Barber emerged as a dynamic football player. He was a three-time Roanoke Times and World News All-District and All-Timesland pick and was twice named Roanoke Times and World News Male Athlete of the Year.
Football was not Barber nor his brother’s only sport. During high school, they also played basketball and baseball and did well in wrestling and track. Barber lettered three times in track. He was the state indoor and outdoor long jump champion twice. As a senior, Barber won the long jump and triple jump state crowns. In 1992, he was second in the long jump at the national finals in the sport.
Geraldine Barber stressed the importance of academics to her sons, and Barber was also an outstanding student in high school. He originally wanted to be an astronaut and did not believe he could have a professional football career. Barber had a 4.0 grade point average and graduated as one of Cave Spring High’s valedictorians.”
Note - Cave Spring high in Roanoke county is a far, far more positive learning environment than the local city high schools. Mrs Barber made sure she lived in a neighborhood where her boys would attend a school in which they would reach their potential.
I really question an article which assumes that the reason is discrimination, when so many other factors can come into play, including the presumption of discrimination which can lead to underachievement.
The main person and the main reasons for this disparity as well as the resultant destruction of the black, two-parent family are:
LBJ
The Great Society
The War On Poverty
When the NBA is 85% white, I’ll pay attention.
