The idea of a government "Department of Information" is not new. After all, the Nazis had one. So did the Soviets. All good little dictatorships need one in order to get the "facts" out to the people.
HuffPo blogger - brain dead psychologist Jim Taylor - originally came up with the idea as a serious measure to get the "facts" out to the people. And like any enthusiastic authoritarian, he wants the government to determine what the "facts" are:
Here is my proposal to return fact-based reality to our national dialogue (note: please don't miss my ironic tone):The federal government should create a Department of Information whose responsibility it is to determine the facts behind any decision that confronts our country.

My proposal: Fire 70% of the executive branch of government, and 50% of the legislative.

The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc [English Socialism], but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten , a heretical thought that is, a thought diverging from the principles of IngSoc should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. - George Orwell, afterword to the 1949 edition

“I have been asked to talk about what I consider the most important challenge facing mankind, and I have a fundamental answer. The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. Perceiving the truth has always been a challenge to mankind, but in the information age (or as I think of it, the disinformation age) it takes on a special urgency and importance. ..” ~ Michael Crichton

Yep. Modern “political correctness” and hate-speech laws closely mirror Orwell’s Newspeak.
