3rd-Grader Busted For Jolly Rancher Possession [growing tyranny]

theodp writes

"A third-grader in a small Texas school district received a week's detention for merely possessing a Jolly Rancher. Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice. But school officials are defending the sentence, saying the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned 'minimal nutrition' foods. 'Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,' said school superintendent Jack Ellis."

Sometimes you enforce a stupid rule to show how stupid it is. Then the stupid rule gets changed. This could be going on here. Some of these school administrators are just as frustrated as we are (believe it or not).

Brazos Elementary Principal Jeanne Young, said the problem, in this instance, was that the candy was provided by another student – not the girl’s parents.

Alert the drug slightly flavored sugar sniffing dogs... there's a whole dealer network for this. I remember when school clubs could sell candy openly to fund the clubs. German Club was worst. I swear the gummy bears we sold were 50% heroin from the way people reacted when we ran out.

When you take the king’s shilling, you dance to the king’s tune.

Amen!! And the costs are very high in the long run.

My young niece showed up for our Mother’s Day celebration with bite marks and bruises on her arms. She is an elementary school teacher, and she had a student “charge” her and go wild last week. She, of course, was not allowed to do anything to the child. No wonder teachers burn out so quickly. I do not want my children around these types of incidents. Instead, we are “learning” at home sans the obstacles imposed in government schools.

According to the disciplinary referral, she would be separated from other students during lunch and recess through Friday.

...

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture’s website, “The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy (TPSNP) explicitly states that it does not restrict what foods or beverages parents may provide for their own children's consumption.”

Ooooo, evil idea. Since she will probably be supervised by some teacher for her lunch & recess detention and there state policy explicitly allows anything the parent gives to the child, I suggest that Tuesday's lunch should be a big bag full of Jolly Ranchers. A few of each flavor. Eat them slowly and tauntingly in front of the teacher supervising her lunch. Just rub it in that the teacher has to supervise her for eating a Jolly Rancher, but there is absolutely nothing he/she can do about this bag full of them.

Somewhere there is a disconnect in statements:

“Ellis said failing to adhere to the state’s guidelines could put federal funding in jeopardy.”

Somewhere there is a disconnect in statements:

She got the candy from some other student/dealer instead of from her parents. See post #28 for my suggested response by the parents.

Okay, so one JR is 6 grams, and it has 23 calories, so that’s 3.8 calories per gram, which is more net nutrition than an apple, which has only 0.5 calories per gram. One JR also has only a third the carbs of a cup worth of apples.

This is insane. Truly, truly insane. That it has come to this makes me happy that I will be dead in twenty years. I don’t want to see anymore of these Orwellian idiot-intellectuals running people’s lives.

Here’s a prediction: within twenty years Christianity will be illegal in some places...those that are still allowed to practice it will face hate crime lawsuits...teachers and other government employees will have the legal power to come to your home and inspect it for anti-earth friendly gizmos.

All of this will be found to be constitutional by Elena Kagan, and the four other justices put on the court by Obama.

This is just another sign of the end of freedom and the end of America.

The same justification used by the putzes in Georgia in banning seniors saying grace and praying before their meals.

They didn't ban praying. They had a moment of silence for each to do his own thing.

Teachers too cowardly to think for themselves, as that may leave them open to union retribution.

Taking candy from a baby. That teacher must be so proud to be such a little bureaucrat “only following orders”.

If the company that owns Jolly Rancher doesn’t make a very high profile point of offering to pay for this kid to go to the best private school in the area next year, the head of their marketing department should be fired.
