Students booted from school for wearing American flag T-shirts; Roger Ebert proposes solution
LA Times ^

Posted on 05/07/2010 9:09:45 AM PDT by Chet 99

Sure, it all makes sense.

Why should American kids be allowed to wear T-shirts with the American flag printed on them in America?

Thankfully one high school administrator was equally outraged and sent the offenders home for it.

Five kids attending Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif., decided to wear patriotic clothing (T-shirts and bandannas with the American flag on them) on Cinco de Mayo. Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez told them that the clothing was inappropriate for the holiday and to ditch the bandannas and turn their shirts inside out or go home.

The kids chose option B. And now the town of Morgan Hill finds itself in the middle of a controversy.

One of the students, Daniel Galli, said school officials told him they could wear their patriotic garb any other day, but "but today is sensitive to Mexican Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

That's what Annicia Nunez, another Live Oak High student, thinks: "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

. . .

Like film critic Roger Ebert. He has a solution.

"Kids who wear American Flag T-shirts on 5 May should have to share a lunchroom table with those who wear a hammer and sickle on 4 July," he tweeted.

This whole country is turning up-side down.

If I were to fall asleep for 10 - 20 years then wake up (like Rip VanWinkle) I don’t think I would recognize where I am.

Most schools I know of have a flagpole and fly the American flag. I wonder what flag this school flys, if any.

I wonder how many kids go to school on the fourth of July, Roger Ebert’s mind is gone.

Since school is out on July 4th, the Mexican? students won’t be in school to wear their Mexican flag shirts. Why didn’t the principal go after the Mexican students that cut school and marched in the street? They were the ones disrespecting the school and laws.

Ha...but they're welcome to wear them on the 4th.

Of course they WOULD have to share a table with such hammer and sickle t-shirts, or with those who wear CHE t-shirts, except that July 4 is on Sunday and public schools are not in session. Our Federal holiday is on Monday, July 5 and there will be no public school that day, either.

What a toolbag.

This seriously is the major problem in American society today.

The left has ditched the melting pot in favor of “diversity”, with the intended and or actual result of the destruction of the American culture.

Many go so far as to deny that there even IS an “American culture”.

Immigrants coming to America should have a desire to be American, or GTHO.

Umm,, OK. Having to share a lunchroom table infers they're allowed to stay on campus. Which would have been the appropriate and legal response.

Based on the photos on their website, I wouldn't think there were five white guys in the whole school.

Too bad Ebert , who I knew 35 years ago in Chicago, didn’t
elaborate on his comment, which, on the face of it, is meaningless. I’ve watched Ebert’s PC-seized critical faculty, along with his very unfortunate health and medical problems, deteriorate over the years, which has been doubly sad. This highschool “flap” of course, is perfectly timed to come on the heels of the massive Open Borders, “WE are YOUR rulers!” rallies of the past weekend.

The real joke is public schools freak out over Coca Cola but have no problem allowing kids to celebrate a fake holiday used as a marketing tool by Corona beer! Hello?????

Good evening. This is Dr. Wesley Smith, Superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District.

The Morgan Hill Unified School District does not prohibit nor do we discourage wearing patriotic clothing. The incident on May 5 at Live Oak High School is extremely unfortunate. While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not, and will not, be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing. This situation and our response are under review.

We know that this is an emotionally charged topic. We would ask you to encourage your students to be safe and focus on their academics while in school. If conversations and/or activities are necessary to express their feelings on this issue, we will find appropriate venues that do not disturb student learning or jeopardize the safety of our students. Furthermore, we encourage everyone to demonstrate respect for each other, open communication, and responsibility.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Dr. Wesley Smith
Superintendent
Morgan Hill Unified School District

I imagine this principle also has a no American Flag clothing rule on Saint Patricks day as well.

Ebert:

What makes you think we, Americans, DON’T have to put up with libtards wearing Che Guevera T-shirts on Memorial Day?

What makes you think we DON’T have to put up with the Red Chinese marching down Independence Avenue in the Washington, D.C. 4th of July parade?

What makes you think we DON’T have to put up the public school systems banning the use of the word Christmas, while they all-out promote “Kwaanza,” invented by a Stalinist professor trying to eradicate Christianity from black culture?

But, Mr. Ebert, you’re Stalinist comparison is way off base. That’d be more like wearing a Klan robe on Martin Luther King day, or a nazi armband on Holocaust Appredication Day.

I also think it’s rather interesting that a holiday lofted by “Corona Beer” to enhance sales (if reports are true) has become what these folks revere.

Talk about a group of people who have been taken for a ride...
