A Round Lake Park woman was held in contempt and jailed because a judge found a message on her T-shirt offensive. Associate Judge Helen Rozenberg held Jennifer LaPenta, who was attending a hearing in a friend's case, in contempt of court for wearing a T-shirt that read: "I have the p----, so I make the rules."
The judge asked LaPenta, 19, if she thought her shirt was appropriate.
LaPenta said she told the judge that it would have been inappropriate if she had been the defendant.
"They should be out looking for people who are breaking the law, not arresting someone wearing a T-shirt," said LaPenta, 19. She was released from Lake County Jail on Tuesday.
LaPenta said she had been at a gym Monday when her friend asked her for a ride to the courthouse. She was wearing sweat pants and the T-shirt when she was handcuffed and jailed

The USSC has already said “f**** the draft” is protected speech. If this is not protected political speech ( a very loose test) then she would be screwed.
I wonder what her father thought of it
Hey, its Chicago. Ya have to lower the standards.
You forgot your sarcasm tag.
“A Round Lake Park woman was held in contempt and jailed because a judge found a message on her T-shirt offensive.”
I’m a little unclear, here.
Why should someone be jailed because some judge is “offended” by something on their T-shirt? There’s nothing illegal about what that girl was wearing, so why is it any of the judge’s business? What if the judge is a Democrat, and suddenly decides to jail people for wearing George Bush, anti-Obama, or American Flag T-shirts? Should she have THAT right, too?
If I was the young woman, I would have offered to take the offensive shirt off — right there and then.
Better make that a triple-bagger. You wouldn't want your dog to lose all respect for you.
Hey truthguy...
I’m sure you’re aware that the truth almost always offends someone.
And the concept expressed on this T-Shirt is truth.
Now, if women would only use their power for good instead of evil.... :)
She was at the gym? she must go there to eat
Not for that women! It would take a mighty desperate man (if she even does it with men) to go along with her rules.
There isn’t enough beer in the world....
I believe the better course of action for the judge would have been to ask this young dingbat to leave the courtroom. Arresting her was a dumb ass thing to do.
Was the t-shirt inappropriate. Of course. Do you arrest her for exercising her first amendment right to be a fool?
Certainly not!
Specifically, what did he get wrong? I mean, from a legal perspective.
more likely the court room...
There is a certain level of respect and decorum that is expected in a courtroom. Unless you are dragged there for violating the law, if you can't extend that respect and decorum, stay the heck out.
The judge probably asked her to leave, and I would be willing to bet she got mouthy with him. She's the idiot.
Don’t confuse he T-Shirt for freedom of speech... There should be some decorum in a court room... I don’t thing going right to arresting for contempt is wrong but hey, the woman showed very poor judgement.
“I wonder what her father thought of it”
Right.....like THAT was raised with a father in the home.
“Judge holds woman in contempt”
His wife said he could.
Obviously a regular at the gym...
The general truth is, though,
men act as badly as women allow them to.
I think we need to enhance the charges.
