Furor Grows Over Arizona's Illegal Immigration Law
AP Via Yahoo News ^ | April 26, 2010 | JONATHAN J. COOPER

he furor over Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigrants grew Monday as opponents used refried beans to smear swastikas on the state Capitol, civil rights leaders demanded a boycott of the state, and the Obama administration weighed a possible legal challenge.

Activists are planning a challenge of their own, hoping to block the law from taking effect by arguing that it encroaches on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration and violates people's constitutional rights by giving police too much power.

The measure — set to take effect in late July or early August — would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.

"If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which is exploring legal action.

Employees at the Capitol came to work Monday to find that vandals had smeared swastikas on the windows. And protesters gathered for an eighth straight day to speak out against a law they say will lead to rampant racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic. The White House would not rule out the possibility that the administration would take legal action against Arizona. President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses, asked the Justice Department to complete a review of the law's implications before deciding how to proceed.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

Good, then all the illegals leaving AZ in droves, like lemmings, will head to CA for refuge. California will then become Atzlqn. Then we will see what the left coast will choose to do about it.

My guess is, we will have 49.5 states in my lifetime, maybe in the next decade, and that won't be the end of it either.

Meanwhile, you need papers in Mexico, and you can get arrested for having a shoelace untied, but nobody's down there smearing beans on their windows.

Refried beans can KILL !

[It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal. ]

How is this any different than the police pulling me over and giving me a sobriety test (arresting me if I refuse) if they suspect I am drunk?

Other states need to enact this or a similar law NOW!

If the states (the ones that matter at least) can unify against the fedgov they stand a FAR better chance than if they stand alone.

“These Mexicans sure have a lot to say about us, what they’re going to do to us without really thinking much about their own sorry state of internal affairs.”

Good point. They’ve made a grizzly mess of their own country and now they want to tell us how to run ours?

President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses...

So it could. But then the liberals were warned that making out house loans on insufficient collateral could lead to the collapse of the banking system, and they assumed it wouldn't. So why do they assume that the police are going to be abusive?

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

Of course its discrimatory. Its discriminatory against illegals. How the State of Arizona decides its laws is none of the business of the Mexican president.

Question. Honest one. I’m not a US citizen. If I went to Arizona on business, or as a tourist, am I going to get deported when I can’t prove my citizenship (on the grounds I’m not a citizen). Or does a visa count?

What about legal aliens? They aren’t lawbreakers and they are going to get grilled.

Support for the immigration law will grow as the opposition becomes more hostile. Things will get ugly.

The Re-Fried Bean Party...

I think re-fried beans should be classified as a weapon of mass destruction...

Or weapon of mass dispersal...

Folks should at least post the correct citation - there's no such thing as 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii).Folks should at least post the correct citation - there's no such thing as 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii).

That's alarming news. I copied that citation directly from a post on FR, after having seen it posted a couple of other times here.

I didn't even think to search the federal statutes myself to see if it was real or accurate. Sheeesh....

Good thing I didn't email it out yet. I'll keep my eyes peeled for corrections to this.

If one isn’t breaking any laws they are not likely to come to the attention of law enforcement to begin with. However once in a while they may, then it is not a big deal- all they have to do is show that they are legally here. As to being “grilled” I doubt that- unless they are in trouble for something else.

That will not happen because when you have the H embroidered to all your clothing the cops will know you are a legal American Hispanic.

What are you inferring by that statement?

What the heck does that mean? How about answering the question in plain English?

You said: That will not happen because when you have the H embroidered to all your clothing the cops will know you are a legal American Hispanic.

Now, what did you really mean by that? I know what a lot of folks reading here will think it means.

I'm sure a visa counts...plus the aim is not to act like Gestapo and harass tourists or tie up innocent people for no reason. People have to quit looking at these things as all or nothing. All or nothing at all is a liberal ploy.

If those who protest against this law feel so strongly about it, they can do this. They can pick up the tabs for ALL services rendered to the illegal aliens, not only in Arizona but EVERYWHERE. Have all bills be passed along to those who think this is a racist bill and don’t like it. Let their checkbooks back up what is spewing from their bloviating pie holes. They’ll shut up then.
