Furor Grows Over Arizona's Illegal Immigration Law
AP Via Yahoo News ^ | April 26, 2010 | JONATHAN J. COOPER

he furor over Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigrants grew Monday as opponents used refried beans to smear swastikas on the state Capitol, civil rights leaders demanded a boycott of the state, and the Obama administration weighed a possible legal challenge.

Activists are planning a challenge of their own, hoping to block the law from taking effect by arguing that it encroaches on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration and violates people's constitutional rights by giving police too much power.

The measure — set to take effect in late July or early August — would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.

"If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which is exploring legal action.

Employees at the Capitol came to work Monday to find that vandals had smeared swastikas on the windows. And protesters gathered for an eighth straight day to speak out against a law they say will lead to rampant racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic. The White House would not rule out the possibility that the administration would take legal action against Arizona. President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses, asked the Justice Department to complete a review of the law's implications before deciding how to proceed.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

This sentence just continues to make me laugh. Maybe we need a law to make water wet, too.

I showed my ID twice today. Big WHOOP.

Also, I used to live in another country, near its border with its neighbor. Because some streets would have us crossing the two lands, I had to carry my Passport in my purse every single day, in case I should be on the wrong side of the border. Without it I’d have been in deep doo doo, but with it, if I was asked at a checkpoint, I was fine and on my way. Again, BIG WHOOP.

...immigrants unable to produce documents showing they are allowed to be in the U.S. could be arrested, jailed for up to six months and fined $2,500. That is a significant escalation of the typical federal punishment for being here illegally — deportation. OOOoooo! WORSE than deportation!

All THAT proves is that "deportation" doesn't mean JACK to these people; they know they'll be right back there at the Home Depot parking lot before the end of next month.

All the "furor" is because -- unlike Federal "enforcement" in recent years -- THIS Law has TEETH.

Let's hear it for laws with TEETH!

This Web site is dated January 25, 2007, but it's still interesting to look at.

"Where to pick up a day laborer"

http://www.cockeyed.com/citizen/local/local_labor_finder.shtml

Now once the law takes effect, they can scratch off all the AZ locations on this list.

Folks should at least post the correct citation - there's no such thing as 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii). Is someone trying to make anti-illegal-immigration people look dumb?

(a)(1)(A)(iv): ... encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law; or

(b)(iii): no such section.

The correct cite on this subject is probably 8 USC 1324(c):

(c) Authority to arrest
No officer or person shall have authority to make any arrests for a violation of any provision of this section except officers and employees of the Service designated by the Attorney General, either individually or as a member of a class, and all other officers whose duty it is to enforce criminal laws.

“I hope that Texas follow quickly with the same state legislation. Not much chance getting Wackyfornia to do it, tho.””

Good, then all the illegals leaving AZ in droves, like lemmings, will head to CA for refuge. California will then become Atzlqn. Then we will see what the left coast will choose to do about it.

Furor Violence Grows Over Arizona's Illegal Immigration Law

There, fixed it. The left will do ANYTHING for power, including fomenting insurrection to get us to surrender. If we give in, our freedom is lost. The sooner we understand that, the better.

What a joke. Can the media really not do better than this?

How can AZ's law "encroach on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration" when all it does is enforce the federal immigration law because the feds won't?

From this Rich Lowry column:

The Arizona law makes it a state crime for aliens not to have immigration documents on their person. This sounds draconian, except it's been a federal crime for more than half a century -- USC 1304(e). Has the open-borders crowd forgotten that it calls illegal aliens "undocumented" for a reason?

Because of this and all the other crap going down, a lot of Rats are going to vote conservative in the privacy of the ballot box.

IMHO, 2010 is not, NOT I say going to be a GOP walkover. Obama's approval rating has slipped below 50%? BFD. Voter fraud and Democrat "outreach" should never be underestimated.

Sure, some GOP Conservatives and lots of RINOs might squeak in. Majority? Don't count our seats before the election.

It is high time for other states like Texas, Oklahoma and others to pass THE EXACT SAME LAW!

The whining from the “vocal minority” of the left serves as proof that this law not only makes sense, but will work. Lastly, it is CONSTITUTIONAL.

Maybe the 70% are going to need to show their support more vigorously.

“If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship,”

I think they need to start asking for citizenship or green card papers at Western Union where the billions of dollars that should have stayed in OUR economy was instead shipped down to Mexico. That is the reason Mexico is so upset about this, remittances are their biggest import.

I heard that Texas is considering it (they only meet once every two years), Utah is going to pass it, and several other states that are worried about the influx of illegals when the law goes into force.

That will not happen because when you have the H embroidered to all your clothing the cops will know you are a legal American Hispanic.

Furor Grows Over Arizona's Illegal Immigration Law

As 70% of Arizonians support the law, all the protest amounts to a f@rt in the face of a hurricane.
