Yid With Lid: He was giving the key note speech at a Washington Institute For Near East Policy and started it out with a "joke" that borders on anti-Semitic, teaching the crowd that Jews are just greedy merchants in the same vein as Shakespeare's Shylock...

You’re right, this time it didn’t happen to me. Imho, a site this large must be very difficult to moderate. The sheer volume of posts and threads has to be almost overwhelming at times. Still, I believe our Mods do an outstanding job.
We’re all human.
Well said.
No, even an ounce of realism should tell anyone that it will be seen as an affirmation of all the reasons that they hate and murder Jews. An American General should be confronting our enemies not humoring their bigotry.
I do think Jones’s telling of the joke depicts the blase manner that Obama and his cronies feel about Jews. Think of him telling a Mexican or Black joke. It’s not going to happen. They aren’t as cavalier about Latins and Blacks. They obviously feel they can do this with Jews, and, considering the voting patterns and insane attachment to the Democrat Party, they probably can.
Without the stereotype of greedy Jewish merchants there is no joke.
I agree the Mods do a fine job...but this one crossed the line...A) he/she did not know who Frederick Douglass was, B) He/she made the swipe at me about mispelling Moderator....then refused to repost my post.
One word...”unprofessional”....comes to mind.
This site’s integritity is normally beyound question....
This is neither “getting one over on our enemies or showing them to be fools.”
This depicts greedy Jews who have no humanity.
More to the point, if Gen Jones had a better record on Israel I would be more forgiving. But he is an Arabist with an anti-Israel bias. Jokes like this confirm that anti-Israel = anti-Semitism.
GOOD on you, Yehuda.
Jones is disgusting.
Thank you for recounting the joke. It's a funny one, though I'd heard it before the General's rendition, too.
This joke and it's subject did not spring into existence yesterday. It plays upon millenia of stereotype regarding Jews.
Everyone gets a bit of stereotyping and it can be decent and innocent. There are many Jewish merchants in history, just like there are many black American basketball players and many white Canadian hockey players. Cool. No harm, no foul, no one in the penalty box. (Hockey players rarely have to jump, after all.)
Moreover, in the joke the Jew is a man with capital and ease (he MUST have water or he himself would be searching for water) who turns away a bedraggled sufferer, to his own Jewish brother, who then turns away the sufferer on (nudge smirk) a sartorial technicality. The sufferer is trapped and helpless between the two powerful Jews who merely play with him.
Bugs Bunny humor. And who's to say he had any water? He might have been counting on going to his brother's restaurant soon, too. We sure know he had a tie, for it.
This man is an avowed enemy. But, the merchant didn't kill him, he offered to sell or him a tie, a proper thing to do, even an equitably kind thing -- and let the joke be on (are you seeing you have admitted it?) the nasty Taliban!
If the two Jews AREN'T selfish, uncaring and greedy then there is no joke. Greed is the tiny jewel upon which the big joke turns.
Utterly wrong, IMHO, sorry -- and I've laughed a lot so I kind of know humor in my beholder's eye. The implied contest of the enmity of the two is the backdrop, the nastiness of the Taliban and the niceness but cleverness of the Jew are the hinges.
This joke could have been about a Sears Roebuck employee vs. a Montgomery Wards employee, for that matter. Beyond the Jewish or even the Taliban issue, it's essentially about getting the upper hand while being neighborly. The irony of the merchant's fair neighborliness, as it turned out, is the most core of the funniness!
IOW, anyone smearing this fine General as bigoted should get chips off shoulders! And the "greedy" comment is uncalled for -- and indicates excessive defensiveness.
Case dismissed.
BTW, in another thread, at this same time (about South Park) I've been speaking up for civility in humor, vs. maliciousness, so that irony is kind of humorous, too -- well, to me.
So long. Hm... maybe I'll have a Mai-Tai, later today.
The list, ping
Are you sure he was black?
It its original color, judging by the age and style of this photo, I'd say he was a deep sepia.
If you are Jewish, you are entitled to chuckle at the joke. It is the place and the audience to which the joke was told that is not funny.
Let’s imagine that the Obama official went to a Jewish gathering and told a joke about Muslims.
Don't hold your breath waiting for a Muslim "joke". Look what's happened to South Park.

Frederick Douglass just happens to be one of my heros.... Black, White, Sepia, Bronzetone, tinted, or green....his words stand on their own power.
HAHAHA !
Couldn’t agree MORE!!!
This guy is another USNA grad gone bad like J. Carter...
Jones is going to be lauded FOREVER by the Naval Academy Alumni Asso as a “distingushed grad” and we will all have to oooo and ahhh just like they fawned all over J. Carter and yet we all REALLY know that Jones is tacky at best, a muslim prez lover at worst...Gen Jones, you could have always said NO!!!!!!ed
