Saline police say an 11-year-old boy fell unconscious and went into convulsions after he was assaulted by a group of students on a school playground earlier this week.
The victim, a 6th grade student at Heritage Elementary School, was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center by ambulance after school officials learned he was suffering seizure-like symptoms late Tuesday morning. He was released later that evening.

Bunten said the altercation started shortly after 11 a.m. during lunch hour at the school at 290 E. Woodland Dr. The victim was surrounded by the students on a field and was pushed to the ground by one of them, reports said. They then kicked and punched him on the ground.

Bunten said officers have not yet spoken to all the students involved and do not yet have permission from all of their parents. Some interviews with students and their parents were scheduled for Friday evening.

As soon as I have kids old enough to walk, I'm going to teach them how to defend themselves. Schools sure won't protect them.

Don't send them to public schools.

Send them to Catholic school, private school or homeschool them. Don’t let them go to public school. That’s like throwing them to the wolves in most places now.

It depends on the public schools. Here in the Appalachian hills, we don’t have these problems.
In Saline they’re likely all white boys with a smattering of hispanics.

This is just horrible. Poor child.
It’s due to the proximity to UM and the Medical Centers.
If you go to the site you can see where part of the promblem is. A lot of Ann Arbor residents don’t feel that the teachers or the school has any responsibility for knowing what’s going on with the kids.
When I went to school, my teachers were all seeing and all knowing.
I hear you. The public schools of today are a far cry from the public schools of yesterday.
My teachers would have pulled their car over to break up a fight in the park in the middle of summer. We were an actual community and the teachers were lifelong residents of that community.
A few years back, a girl I went to school with was killed in an accident. Both of her parents were teachers of mine and I went to the funeral as much for them as I did the former schoolmate.

Other than the like, you know, knocking to the ground and kicking and punching and all that.
My husband has been a schoolteacher for 30 years, and he’s worked in black schools, white schools, and mixed schools. He’s never seen a gang of white kids attack a lone kid. He’s seen white kids fight each other, but when a number of kids group together to attack one kid on his own, the gang is always black and the lone kid is more often white, but not always. In schools where blacks are in low numbers, this doesn’t happen and they don’t give nearly as much trouble. But when they’re about 25% - 30% or more of the population, there’s always ganging up for whitey beatdowns and occasionally they beatdown other black kids. On their own, they’re cowards, but in a group, they’re thugs. Always.
