Graham withdraws support for climate legislation
Washington Post ^ | April 25, 2010 | Juliet Eilperin

The effort to enact climate and energy legislation this year suffered a critical blow Saturday when Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.), the key Republican proponent of the bill, said he was unwilling to move ahead because of Democrats' push for immigration reform.

The move forced the other two authors of the bill, Sens. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), to cancel a news conference planned for Monday that would have unveiled the climate and energy plan they negotiated with Graham, the only Republican who had been participating in the discussions.

In an interview Saturday, Graham said he did not see how the Senate could pass any climate and energy bill this year if Senate Democratic leaders and President Obama pushed for immigration reform, as they suggested they would last week.

"The political environment that we needed to have a chance [to pass the bill] has been completely destroyed" by the push for immigration, Graham said...

I don’t think McCain broke up. McCain is running conservative until after the primary I think.

Yes, but my point is why would Lindsey go against what we know McCain wishes he could do right now?

One person said that it was hurting McCain, and they have a point.

upchuck, earlier in his carrer until a few years ago, wasn’t Grahamnesty fairly conservative? What else besides the gang of 14, amnesty and global warming did the rats have his vote for?

If that’s so, then blackmail explains it all.

He sold his votes to keep someone quiet. He’s an Air Force lawyer in the Reserves.

For the rest of you, he’s been outed as a blade. The link’s at comment# 64.

With 70% of Arizona for the recent bill signed into law by the governor, Juan should be toast. ;o) Go JD!

Even if electric bills go up sharply, the American people would never understand that Cap and Trade did it. They don’t know what Cap and Trade is and will never understand.

Graham was a stand up guy when Clinton was in office. He was one of the House Managers driving Impeachment if I remember correctly.

Not that he’s worried. He’s been hated by conservatives for a while now, but had no trouble winning re-election in 2008.

Here’s some interesting information on that topic.

Unknown to me, he actually fronted for Clinton in some ways back then.

If McCain loses the primary, he'll spend every waking minute over the next four months poking us in the eye. He could still create a lot of damage in a lame duck session...

You make an excellent point. Given the choice, I'd rather risk the four months than have to endure his winning another term.

Lindsay is not up for reelection until 2014. It is too early to go for him conservative.

I do not think he is hurting McCain at all.

Maybe there is something we do not know about Lindsay, but it would have come out by now.

I will have to give the situation some thought. Maybe I conduct a little research.

Yes.

AAMOF, he was one of the House Managers at Clinton's impeachment. Did a fine job.

Then he got elected Senator. And wandered off the farm.

Lots of folks are speculating about blackmail and timing.
