Georgia Republican Johnny Isakson finally has a major Democratic opponent in his bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate, but the first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race finds the incumbent holding on to more than 50% support.
Fifty-one percent (51%) of likely voters in the state favor Isakson in a match-up with State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond who earns 35% support. Six percent (6%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and eight percent (8%) remain undecided.

The speculation continues that Isakson’s medical problems will force his retirement, and there is some concern about his ability to carry out his job.

Any relation to Strom Thurmond?
To: ak267
He recently had a blood clot from a bacterial infection and also has heart troubles.

Michael Thurmond is African-American. It’s very unlikely.

Strom was a southern democrat and a segragationist. So you never know. It may be his love child. LOL

Isakson hasn’t been ideal. He has been too quick to follow Chambliss, who is poor excuse for a senator. A couple of years ago, he and Chambliss both were pushing for amnesty, until they got an ear full from voters.

There are few white liberals in Georgia. Thurmond doesn't have a chance in such a state.

Michael Thurmond is African-American. Its very unlikely. Perhaps you need to do more research about Strom. He fathered a child with a black woman over 70 years ago. Also, it was quite common for slaves and ex-slaves to take the last names of their masters.
To: Clintonfatigued
No....go back and check the latest dirt on Strom....the DEMs made sure this came out....

I still don’t trust these bastards, but I will vote for Isakson over token Thurmond...Thurmond only got elected because he was a CINO....conservative in name only....

Well Thrumond is a RAT. So the thought of voting for him shouldn’t enter into a freeper’s mind.

Sorry....I mixed up a couple of threads...last one I was on was about Strom Thurmond...of course you are right. But sometimes Georgia Voters can get taken in by a conservative sounding Democrat like Thurmond. He is a complete waste of voter effort...his ass is grass as far as I’m concerned..

If he were a love child hed have his mothers last name. ;d I'm not saying love child.
If one of Strom's ancestors owned some of Michael Thurmond's ancestors, it's quite possible Strom has a kinship relation.
To: Clintonfatigued
Last I read, Isakson had fully recovered. But if Isakson needs to step down, I hope that Herman Cain replaces him on the ballot prior to the election, because if he resigns after his reelection whoever replaces him would have to run again in 2012.
