Riverdale High School, the stomping ground of comic book legend Archie Andrews, will open its doors to its first openly gay student.
Kevin Keller will be the new student to join Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty and Reggie, Archie Comics publications announced Thursday.
"The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books," said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics co-CEO.
Kevin will make his entrance in the comic book in September

LOL!
I always thought Jughead had some secret thing for Betty, but feared rejection.
I think they tried to retcon that into the strip at one point to, ironically enough, “disprove” the whole “Jughead is gay” rumor.
Actually, Archie comics sell better than a lot of the books by Marvel and DC.
I have no problem with people who happen to be gay, if they keep what is properly private, private.
Homosexuality is defined only by the fact that you are sexually attracted to members of your own gender. That’s it.
If the Archie comics keep other sexual topics out (and as far as I know they still do), why do they feel compelled to introduce it when they don’t show Betty and Archie getting down, for example?
Private matters should be kept private, period. I am happy to work and socialize with homosexuals so long as they don’t shove it in my face, just like my husband and I don’t shove our heterosexuality into their faces.
We are what we are, but sexualizing materials aimed at children for any reason is offensive and wrong. Like others said, they could have had a “gay” character for years but never mentioned it. Overt sexuality has no place in the Archie comics in any form, gay or straight.
Like the MSM, Archie’s fall into political correctness probably means there are NO readers left. The attempt to shock and scandalize is their last gasp.
No kids read Archie comics. Not one. I think the only people reading Archie comics these days are the adults that used to read them as kids.
Betty and Veronica. Hmmm....
“Keeping the world of Archie current.....”
BTW, the following might already be included since I last read Archie comics around 1960, then discovered that real girls are much more fun than Betty and Veronica:
Tatoos & body metal on females
Unnatural hair colors and styles
The entire Gothic cult
Cellphones, texting & Blackberries
More recreational drugs than you can shake a Miss Grundy at
Pregnancies and more pregnancies
Etc.................
There’s one rather amusing comment—although the poster seems to have managed to post it about ten times:
“They should do a comic where the Prophet Mohammed is gay and beats Jughead in a chitlin eating contest.”
Good idea.
Good Lord. Is nothing sacred any more?
Have you seen Reggie’s guitar playing?
If he ain’t gay he is at least hitting from both sides of the plate!
Dang, I was at least hoping it would be a lesbian. ;-)
Now that there’s funny, I don’t care who y’are!
To them, just having children is "shoving heterosexuality in their faces." You're a "breeder," and that's bad.
I have a friend named Kevin Keller who has a birthday coming up in July. I’ll be sure to get him a copy.
“Good Lord. Is nothing sacred any more?”
No,...and you are not entitled to be offended or scandalized either!
