Gun goes off in car at Utah border; two BYU-Idaho students hurt

PORTAGE -- Two college students heading to Salt Lake City were hurt when a gun discharged inside their vehicle near the Utah-Idaho border.

Four male students from Brigham Young University-Idaho were traveling south on Interstate 15 to attend the LDS General Conference in Salt Lake City, authorities say.

Around noon, in the front passenger seat, a man identified as Sterling Glines, 24, of Arizona, was examining his .40-caliber Glock.

The vehicle had just crossed the border into Utah, and Glines reportedly was explaining how the gun wouldn't fire if the slide was pushed back when the weapon discharged a single shot.

The bullet went through Glines' left hand and hit the forearm of the driver, identified as Ben Baugh, 23, of American Fork. The bullet also struck the driver's side door just below the window.

One of the men called 911.

Glines and Baugh were taken to Bear River Valley Hospital in Tremonton. The injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry.

Authorities say Glines has a concealed weapons permit issued by Arizona. The other two men in the car, a 21-year-old man from Pocatello, Idaho, and a 23-year-old man from Tooele, were not hurt.

UHP is investigating.

I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say the guy, who was probably riding shotgun (no pun intended), was demonstrating by pushing his left hand up against the muzzle and front of the slide and pulling the trigger. Apparently you don't have to be one of the sharper tools in the shed to get into BYU.

I think the decision should be based on how big of a hole you’d like to punch.

And especially don’t cover the muzzle with the palm of your left hand to hold the bullet in the barrel.

vlad;

Now now, be nice to glocks-any pistol will potentially fire if the slide is forward enough to enable the sear...

Years ago (c1983) I was told by an Army instructor that teh M1911 had 4 safeties, name them:

Well, I got stumped and he smiled and said-”yep, teh half cock notch, teh grip safety, and teh thumb safety-what about teh disconnector?” an he proceeeded to ‘spalin that the pisto lwould not fire if the sldie was pushed back a fraction. He ten stated that this could be a life-saver if someone was threatening you with a 1911-simply pus the muzzle with your ahnd to disable it!!!!!

I challenged him to prove it-after he cleared it, I cleared it, I held it cocked and off safe and he tried to prevent the hammer from falling by pushing on the muzzle. I simply let him push my hand back, while I pulled the trigger. Hammer fell. He made me do about a million push-ups for “insubordination...”.

I enjoyed that session with my face in the Benning red clay more than he would have imagined.

He was an idiot, just as Mr. Glines apparently is.

Do you want to piss them off or do you want to kill them. Thats the difference between a 9mm and a 40 or 45.

Perhaps it was a 1911 type. Whichever, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t test it against my hand.

I think it was a book by Applegate that taught me not to use the safety on my Ruger semi-auto. Teach yourself, using an EMPTY gun, to rack it when you need it...now you are ready to fire.

If it worked for the Chinese cops in Shanghai in the 20s, it ought to work for me.

When I train students to use a Glock.

First de-cock the gun then insert the magazine.

When you touch the de-cocked trigger,
it is a reminder to rack the slide.

Depends on the Sig. My Sig Pro had (before that terrible boating accident where I lost all my firearms) no safety, just a decocking lever.

Yes, true, but you have a 12 to 14 pound trigger pull to get that first shot off (unless you cock the hammer to drop it to 5 pounds).
With the Glock all you have to overcome is the 4.5 pound trigger pull from the get go. That is why I thought the Sig would be a better pistol for my less experienced friend.
He bought a Ruger 9MM, shot four clips through it and considers himself experienced. Some people just don't get it.

Lots of Sigs like that, such as the .380ACP P230/232.

I’d like to know: how many FReepers who carry daily (or will admit it) have ever had an accidental discharge (or will admit it)? I haven’t been carrying daily that long, but haven’t had an AD, ever, not in almost 30 years of hunting and a year and a half of carrying daily.
