President Obama's pick to head the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel is withdrawing her nomination amid Republican protests over past statements she made on abortion and national security.
Dawn Johnsen said she was dropping out of the process because her "nomination has met with lengthy delays and political opposition that threaten" her objective to restore the office to its "best nonpartisan traditions" and "prevent OLC from functioning at full strength."
"I hope that the withdrawal of my nomination will allow this important office to be filled promptly," she said.
A White House spokesman said the president accepted Johnsen's request.
"Her credentials are exemplary and her commitment to the rule of law has been proven time and again, but it is now clear that Senate Republicans will not allow her to be confirmed," White House spokesman Ben Labolt said in a written statement.

How do all of these people hold their hammers when they’re nailing themselves to these crosses????????
The most partisan president in history and his friends keep whining about how partisan everyone else is....
That's insulting to monsters!
The evil just sucks the oxygen out of my lungs.
Well mebbe it was the Republicans *and* Beck?
suing the catholic church because of it's pro-life stand...
additionally she compared pregnancy to slavery, very close
to Bo saying that pregnancy is punishment.
While Jesus may win in the end, but that’s cold comfort to the 260 million people slaughtered by their own governments over the last 120 years or so.
Here’s reality: the same ideas that have animated history’s worst mass murderers now have a happy home in the White House. We have union thugs articulating the same sort of rhetoric heard in the last days of the old Weimar Republic - and in the first days of what followed. That’s what’s coming at us.
That is a rhetorical question, right?
Yup. Glenn Beck just nailed another liberal scalp to his lodge pole. He'll never smoke the peace pipe with OBOZO. Sorry, been watching Jeremiah Johnson on DVD.
If the candidate is not an extremist sexist, racist Fascist hard core Leftist, Obama would not nominate him/her.
I’ve been told to pray more by my confessor, trust more in Christ, and continue to protest, write letters, fast, and so on, all very solid advice ... to worry or to be anxious (according to saintly sorts), is to let the devil in while simultaneously kicking out Christ, which ultimately is to be avoided.
They will have to be more specific, Which "controversial" nominee?
If this can happen to Dawn Johnson, what is to stop the same success from happening for the expected ultra-liberal replacement for Justice Stevens ?
Same strategy must be followed and we should put pressure on Republicans.
It's interesting how, a week before the "domestic rightwing terrorist camp" roundups, there was that poll that "showed" that so many conservatives believed Obama was not American, was a socialist, and all those other conspiracy theories
Then we got this WAVE of stories about how the Tea Partiers are dangerous and potentially violent.
Don't hear too many libs talking about how protest is patriotic anymore--now to oppose Obama is in itself akin to a crime.
"I'm sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you're not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we're Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration. " - HRC
“Thats for Miguel Estrada and Janice Rogers-Brown.”
I disagree with you on one thing.
I don’t think we’re anywhere closing to completing payback for what the Dems did to Estrada and Rogers-Brown.
But this is a good start.
Just remember, FRiends, it’s always the 2nd or 3rd nominee that is the President’s real choice.
WE NEED TO BLOCK THE FIRST FIVE.
It’s about time the Repubs did some fighting against Obama’s lefty nominees. I am pleased to hear that they stuck to their guns on this one. This woman is a very bad choice.
All his choices have been bad and even worse for our country IMO.
Does Sarah Palin agree with you on this?
