Bart Stupak to Retire
CBS News Political Hotsheet ^ | April 9, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak, the congressman who led anti-abortion rights Democrats in the House during health care negotiations, will retire this year, CBS News has learned. He is expected to announce his plans later this morning.

Had Stupak sought re-election, he would have faced challengers from both the left and the right backed by interest groups angered by Stupak's health care vote.

Stupak negotiated with Democratic leaders down to the eleventh hour for stricter abortion language in the health care bill, but he ultimately voted for it after President Obama agreed to sign an executive order assuring the new laws will keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.

That prompted the conservative Tea Party Express to launch a $250,000 ad campaign against Stupak this week. The group also scheduled a handful of stops on its bus tour in Stupak's district.

On the left, the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America has been working to defeat Stupak and instead elect his Democratic primary challenger Connie Saltonstall.

Like many other congressmen, Stupak received violent threats from citizens after his health care vote. However, the Michigan Democrat came under particularly intense scrutiny because of his role in the abortion debate.

Exactlty! I had been saying for months prior to the actual Obamacare vote that it was a done deal and a foregone conclusion - none of these Dems that voted for it care if they get reelected or not.

Yep.

All the drama was nothing but political theater while they negotiated what their rewards would be for giving up their elected office for the sake of the Communist takeover of our country. They have no worries about their future - they helped engineer a massive government takeover of our economy and they will be richly rewarded.

Yep.

We are NOT citizens of a representative democracy! We are subjects of a ruling Marxist plutocracy that only care about their own wealth and power. Our fate was sealed many decades ago when we allowed governance to gradually become a lucrative full-time, lifelong career.

And yep. Exactly. Government has become a giant teat for millions of greedy people who only care about themselves and others. They're purpose is to design ways in which to extract money from people who actually produce things of value.

Great post.

“Government has become a giant teat for millions of greedy people who only care about themselves...”

Very well put. There seems no end to people who want to line up for “free Obama money”. We are witnessing the installation of a welfare state where people focus their efforts on figuring out how to get the most dollars from government entities, versus doing any productive work.

Speaking now. Except for abortion (previous position), he was a typical “progressive” liberal — supporter of John Kerry, against the Iraq war, going thru list of issues and shows he shares Democrat goal of more federal government. Praising Obama and Pelosi.

Some one posed the question “is there a pattern here”? I think ledty demrats and RINOs have serious conerns about their health—if you get my meaning. IMHO resigning because they’ve screwed up their own reelections is not enough to explain it. I think they’re terrified about the exposure to the general public that is implicit in running for office. The Secret Service may be good, but they simply don’t have the manpower to cover all the bases.

Mind you, those who may be listening in here, I do not advocate assassination or any violence against these traitors. I do not want to make martyrs of them. And that lends the lie to the Onada regime’s claims that conservatives and/or Tea Partiers are inciting violence. The violence that is out there—verbal or otherwise—is all from the left.

I dont even really care about his lavish pension or 6 figure income as some empty suit. I just want these bastards out of power so they cant destroy this country anymore. Id happily give every dem congressman and senator 10 million each to just go away.

It would be delicious irony if Stupak is counting on help from his new-found bud Barack. Rahm can pay him a special visit on his last day in office - in the Congressional shower...
