Glenn Beck and radio pals Pat Gray and Stu Burguiere rattled down the list of potential Republican nominees for President in 2012 this morning, and they had some bad news for the Tea Party movement: Sarah Palin probably wont run, Ron Paul is still and long shot, and Mitt Romney, as of now, is the GOPs best bet.
While Gray and Burguiere are harsh to most of the candidates, Beck spreads the love around. He tells his co-hosts that he likes Palin but doesnt think she will run, Bobby Jindal but doesnt think he has the charisma, and Congressman Paul but doesnt think America is ready for him. Then, at the bottom of the pile, he finds Mitt Romney:
"I have to tell you that Mitt Romney could be the only guy that could win, and I dont know if he could because I think that Americans are going to be I mean, this country is going to be in deep trouble by 2012, and the next term, if its not decided this term, the next term will decide our fate. Then I hope that Americans are ready for an adult and are ready for hard news."
Its a strange, possibly sad conclusion from someone who had called Romney out for flirting with socialism, but ultimately Beck was trying to determine who could win, not who he thought should. If Beck was playing process of elimination, which he clearly was, its hard to refute his conclusion that Romney is the least likely candidate to crash and burn in a general election, if only for being a conservative from the most liberal state of America and having moderate successes like universal health care under his belt. Or and this one is for you conspiracy theorists out there maybe Beck is intentionally downplaying the Republican candidates ability to success so as to clear the brush and become the reluctant right-wing candidate by default. After all, he is the second-most popular human being in America. (Link to a Harris poll: Glenn Beck is the second most popular television personality in America second only to Oprah Winfrey.)
Listen to the segment below:
He is also another set up candidate being shoved down our throats like McCain was.
Please America, do not let them do this to us. Elect our own conservative candidate.
Not only NO, but Hell NO.
If it were [ONLY] Romney v. Obama I think I’d vote Obama... at least he doesn’t pretend that he doesn’t hate Conservative thought. {IE, better to have an enemy you know is your enemy than a ‘friend’ who is your enemy.}
{At least Obama’s on the verge of becoming a lame-duck... getting Romney in the office would ONLY give people a “see, things got worse under a republican” tag-line.}
Those who say Sarah Palin probably won’t run are only
trying to convince themselves. They know she will trounce
their favoirte in the primaries.
Meanwhile, I hope and trust that Palin isn’t confiding her inner thoughts to Glenn Beck.
They will pull another McCain with Romney if we let them.
>> Just a Mormon trying to sell us another Mormon.
Thanks for reminding me... I forgot about that li’l factoid in the Beck bio.
Before your post, I was really scratching my head over this latest Glenn Beck nonsense.
I stopped watching Glenn when he had that Thursday afternoon breakdown on TV.
I love the Judge (Napolitano) who subs for him, but I don’t watch Beck anymore.
I think he’s gone nuts on us.
I’m starting to think Glenn Beck is a plant...in both senses.
LOL
My problem with Romney is that he has been all over the map on too many issues.
What does he really stand for?
We don’t need shapeshifters; we need people of substance in Washington.
Far from an endorsement of Romney, if that’s what folks are going to try and make of it. Well, silly me, of course the Beck bashers will.
Glenn: Stuff it. We are not surprised that you chose the suave Romney.
.. but ultimately Beck was trying to determine who could win, not who he thought should...
Which is also how I heard it. Beck also said "I really like Rick Santorum... This guy gets it 110 percent" (via NRO)
Beck says what his producers tell him to, just like every other Fox show host. Producers must be hearing from the old-line GOP to support Romney.
Last election, 3\4’ths of the country never got a chance to even vote in the primary before it was all “settled for MCCain” after NH and especially SC.
Why won’t this next election be exactly the same?
Mitch Daniels, governor of Indiana is the Dark Horse that I am betting on if he really tried for it. The man is smart, he has done a great job here in Indiana and would be one of the few with enough savvy to undo much of what Obama has done IMHO.
Don’t watch Beck - so does he consider himself a conservative?
Beck knows better than that.
The list of possible candidates is not done. It’s too early. It will emerge after the off-year elections. Look for some Republican governors to emerge. Also, I believe Fido the Dog could beat Soetoro in 2012.
Until I heard this, I was thinking that Glenn was starting to sound fairly reasonable the few times I heard him lately.
