NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance for the first time jumped last week, according to government data released Thursday. There were 460,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended April 3, up 18,000 from an upwardly revised 442,000 the previous week, according to the Labor Department's weekly report.

If you wait until your job is gone, then it gets much tougher...timing is everything.

Timing certainly helps, but you can increase your options by broadening your search area. It amazes me that so many have chimed in and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when I just lived the last 30 years doing exactly what I describe. I've worked in some real 3rd world $hit holes, not because I wanted to, but because that was where the money was being paid. My experience has been that it is easy to rise to the top of your immediate workforce with a moderate effort. A lot of people I've encountered work harder at getting out of work than the work itself actually is. Everybody has worked around people like this to one degree or another, too.....

“If you are looking for work, start from where you are standing.” ~ President Abraham Lincoln

However, since we have an egomaniac that THINKS he’s a black Abraham Lincoln, it needs to be stated this way:

“If you are looking for work, don’t look to me, ‘cuz I ain’t gonna help ya!” ~ 0bama

I didn't say you didn't know what you were talking about.

Really? Have you forgotten this comment that you made?

Sorry, but you’re sounding a tad bit out of touch with the average person seeking work in this country right now.

I'm not out of touch in the least and I'm not being defensive, either. Nor am I exaggerating. You are quite obviously the one who knows nothing about what I'm saying. I hope you enjoy mediocrity. If you had experience trying to find work in lean times you would know that I'm spot on in my observations. I'm telling you what worked for me when I went through bad times. This economy, as bad as it is, is nowhere near what I experienced in the early 1980's. It's nowhere near what I personally experienced in 1987, either. I didn't sit around feeling sorry for myself. I got out and kept at it until I found gainful employment.

3-4 part time jobs during that awful period.

Part time jobs I had during that period included, but were not limited to driving cars through an auto auction one night a week, shucking oysters at a bar on Friday and Saturday nights, waiting tables, working as a short order cook, driving a cab, moving furniture for a furniture store, doing yard work, often times for people who I'd just moved furniture for, working construction, working as a life guard, working at a car wash, working as a bar back, then later a bar tender and the list goes on and on.

What you don't know about me would fit on the point of a pin with acres of room to spare.

Once again, you open your mouth and remove all doubt.....you really should quit before you make a complete fool of yourself.

Of course, we must also remember the census workers are offsetting/dampening this bleak outlook.
And:

10.6 million is the number of self-employed workers.

(Source: Upcoming Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008)

Self-Employed do not receive unemployment benefits and are not counted in te unemployment rate/numbers.

And:

7.6 million is the number of workers who hold down more than one job. So-called moonlighters comprise 5 percent of the working population. Of these moonlighters, 4 million work full time at their primary job and part time at their other job. (Source: Upcoming Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008)

When these people lose only one of their jobs, they are still not counted in unemployment numbers, of course.

And:

The fact you feel the need to resort to petty personal insults tells me I know all I need to know about you. ;)

“There has never been a time in my life from about 18 on that I’ve had less than three sources of income.”

- You must feel so special. As for the rest of us, we have families to feed, and don’t want to go into MASSIVE frickin debt to the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to go to a 4 year university for a worthless 4 year degree.

For the Census Bureau.

"The general trend in the jobs market is improving, reinforced by the decline in continuing claims," said Carl Riccadonna, senior U.S. economist for Deutsche Bank. "That's a good indication that the next move in the unemployment rate could be lower."

They say earlier in the article that the reason that the contining claims number is improving is that people are dropping off the rolls due to expiration of benefits. So somebody explain to me how THAT is an improvement??? People are falling from the ranks of the unemployed, but for the wrong reasons.
++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's a chart to prove what you're talking about - historic highs for those unemployed a LONG time - and at some point these millions are dropping off the other side of the benefits. AS you say, how is that a good sign exactly??:

“I’d like Obamalamadingdong to tell everyone where the incentive to look for work comes from when the current unemployment compensation lasts for ninety nine weeks! “

Think about that, it’s almost 2 years? Can anyone say, permanent underclass...just what these basTURDS want...

“We learned that the economy actually produced a substantial number of jobs instead of losing a substantial number of jobs.”

What, is he in junior high? This aint the time and place for OTJ training you maroon.

We need somebody who knows what they’re doing, as opposed to some community activist socialist bent on destroying America in the WH.
