The McCain Mutiny: A maverick fights for his political life—and his soul
Newsweek ^ | 2010-04-03 | David Margolick

Posted on 04/03/2010 3:58:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Late last month, at a dusty fairground outside Tucson, John McCain stood behind the person who is, at least for the next few years, surely his most important legacy to American politics. And speaking to the adoring mob, Sarah Palin stood behind John McCain, repaying his inestimable gift to her in the most compelling possible fashion: by helping him to survive.

(snip)

Many, many years ago she'd competed in a beauty pageant, Palin declared, as women howled (and a few men growled) approvingly. McCain would surely win the talent and debate portions of any such contest, she went on, but no way would the Washington elite and "pundints" and "lame-stream media" ever crown him "Miss Congeniality"! "He's never been a company man, he's never been one to just 'go with the flow,'?" she crowed.

(snip)

...Palin had apparently missed the real message this electoral season in Arizona: for his three decades in Congress, McCain hadn't gone with the flow enough, at least not enough to satisfy many Arizona Republicans. Why else would his rival, former congressman J.D. Hayworth, be billing himself as "the consistent conservative"? Many of the GOP's most faithful, the kind who vote in primaries despite 115-degree heat, tired long ago of McCain the Maverick, the man who had crossed the aisle to work with Democrats on issues like immigration reform, global warming, and restricting campaign contributions. "Maverick" is a mantle McCain no longer claims; in fact, he now denies he ever was one. "I never considered myself a maverick," he told me. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities." Yet here was Palin, urging her fans four times in 15 minutes to send McCain the Maverick back to Washington.

You do know that JD Hayworth endorsed McCain for President, right? So, by your own definition, he too, is culpable for supporting a flaming socialist.

It's beyond pathetic that the only defense the Palin supporters have is to attack other conservatives or even directly verbally assault the person they're talking to.

Palin has gone beyond mere association and into the realm of actively expressing support for McCain and his twisted agenda of collaboration with progressives and Marxists.

She put herself into a no-win situation, and she has no one to blame but herself.

First off I am a fourty sixer so show some respect for your elders. Second I ignore nothing, certainly no petty little attempts at personal insults ( another liberal thing to do)

Romney, RonPaul, Huckmister.... not my kind of people.

Gotta go take my pills..... oh and having served two tours in Viet Nam its PTSD to you.

I think the Reavgan amnesty, named Simpson-Mazzoli, was for three million. It was promised to end the problem of illegal immigration forever. I think Reagan was fooled again on that one.

Sorry, rabs, but you're a hypocrite. You knowingly support Ron Paul, who has endorsed leftists 10 times worse than McCain.

You can cry all you want about others attacking conservatives, but you fail to realize you are doing the EXACT SAME THING.

And you fail to see it in your own self.

What say you about Michele Bachmann selling out her principles and towing the party line?

Bachmann backs McCain - now
By Dennis Lien on August 26, 2008 11:46 AM | No Comments

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann was no early supporter of John McCain for president. Back in March she said of the Arizona senator, "He is not my man," and today acknowledged that, "John McCain was not my first choice."

But since McCain will be the Republican Party’s nominated candidate in next week, Bachmann has come around.

In a telephone conference call today arranged by the state Republican Party, the 6th District congresswoman listed lots of reasons to support McCain over the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, whom she called the nation’s “most liberal senator.’’

“John McCain is our nominee,’’ Bachmann said, adding that the choice “could not be more stark.’’

Not to mention the fact that Bachmann is wholeheartedly a Palin supporter and welcomes stumping for her in Minnesota. What do yo have to say about that?

And of course, you tossed out the name DeMint at one point, so I'll post this Romney lovefest endorsement for you as well:

January 8, 2007

Dear Fellow Republican,

I’m writing to ask for your support of Governor Mitt Romney for President. Over the next 10 years, America will face unprecedented challenges. We must elect a President in 2008 who is up to the task, and I need you to encourage Mitt to run.

The threat of terrorism will continue to grow. America’s energy needs will increase, and so will our dependence on foreign oil. The number of retirees will increase dramatically, and without major reforms, the future of Social Security and Medicare will be in peril. Without strong leadership, illegal immigration will continue to cost American taxpayers billions of dollars. America’s education system and global competitiveness will continue to decline without major changes. I believe Governor Romney will provide the leadership America needs to meet this new generation of challenges.

America’s success and strength emanate from the private sector: traditional faith-based values, families, churches, volunteerism and free enterprise. We must elect a President who understands the strength of America. Governor Romney has spent most of his life outside of government. He has been a successful businessman and national leader. As governor, he has taken Massachusetts from large debts to surpluses while holding the line on taxes. He has been married to his wife Ann for 37 years; they have 5 boys and 10 grandchildren. Their lives reflect the best of America’s traditions and values.

Governor Romney has helped to start and manage national and international companies. He understands the global economy, capital formation and the need to make America more competitive. When the nation needed him to save the failing and bankrupt 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, Mitt Romney volunteered to take over the leadership of an event which was headed towards a national embarrassment. He served for over two years with no salary and even contributed Senator Jim DeMint $1 million of his own money to make sure the Olympics went forward. His leadership resulted in one of the most successful Olympics in history. Mitt Romney made America proud.

As Governor he faced down a $3 billion deficit and balanced the budget. He passed innovative health care reforms and education scholarships based on achievement. He fought an activist state court that imposed same-sex marriage on the people of his state and he championed the Federal Marriage Amendment. Once again, he did not take a salary for his public service as Governor.

We need a President who will welcome new ideas and yet knows when to take charge – someone who will call on America’s strengths and provide leadership for the new generation of challenges we face. I believe Governor Romney will be the kind of President who will inspire Americans to reach higher because he shares our goals:

American Security

Governor Romney has innovative ideas about how to adapt our military, Special Forces, intelligence services, and defense technologies to protect America from future terrorist attacks. He believes in peace through strength. He also supports the right of law-abiding individuals to protect themselves in their homes; he will be a strong defender of the second amendment and will protect our right to “bear arms.”

I support Governor Romney because he believes we need to achieve operational control of America’s borders, issue fraud-proof worker identification cards, and implement an enforceable legal immigration system. He does not believe that people who come to the U.S. illegally are entitled to a special right to citizenship.

American Competitiveness

We must guarantee that America is the best place in the world to invest capital and operate a business. I support Governor Romney because he will make America’s education and workforce development system the best in the world. He understands that by streamlining our tax code and legal and regulatory systems, America will become the best place in the world to do business.

American Independence

America should not be dependent on unreliable countries for our energy needs. I support Governor Romney because he believes we need to make America independent of foreign sources of oil. We must protect our freedom by taking our resources out of the hands of hostile regimes and using them instead to build our economy at home. Through conservation and the development of alternative fuels, America can be independent of oil from the Middle East, Venezuela, and other unreliable suppliers.

American Values

Governor Romney has exemplified the moral leadership that must be the hallmark of an American President. He knows that traditional values begin with doing the right thing; saying what you mean and meaning what you say; and keeping your promises. He strongly believes that America must keep its promises to seniors before we make new promises that we can’t afford. Governor Romney has the vision and the courage to reform Social Security and Medicare for the next generation while guaranteeing promised benefits to today’s seniors. He knows that doing the right thing means that every American must have access to quality healthcare. He passed such a plan as Governor and would support other innovative state and federal solutions, rejecting an unworkable “one-size-fits-all” approach. I support Governor Romney because he believes all Americans should have a health plan that they can afford, own and keep.

Governor Romney is strongly pro-life. He will be a great asset to the cause of life because he has done something that we must convince many other Americans to do; he has changed his mind. After reviewing new scientific data, he is absolutely convinced that human life begins at conception. He will work to protect the lives of mothers and babies. He will also support promising adult stem cell research while maintaining the ban on federal funding of research that involves the killing of human embryos.

Governor Romney is opposed to same-sex marriages and civil unions. He supports a Federal Marriage Amendment that protects traditional marriage. He believes in the equal rights of every American, but does not believe activist judges should be making the law in these areas. He also rejects government promotion of the homosexual lifestyle.

Governor Romney believes that American values should include the end of wasteful government spending and the elimination of the huge debts that our children should not be forced to pay. He also believes that preserving our environment is an important American value and a tangible legacy for future generations.

I believe that Governor Romney can restore America’s leadership at home and around the world. Too often, career politicians who have spent their lives in government, turn first to government solutions. And too often, well-intentioned government solutions have only made our problems worse. As a leader who has spent most of his life in the private sector, Governor Romney will call on America’s strength and character to solve problems and secure our future.

I Need Your Help! Governor Romney has organized an exploratory committee to promote his vision and goals for America and to gauge support for his potential candidacy. I believe that he is exactly the leader America needs to secure our future. Americans are tired of the same old ideas that keep coming out of Washington. They are hungry for a leader who will draw on America’s strength. I would like Governor Romney to know that key Republicans like you want him to run for President. If you agree with me, please use the enclosed replycard to let me know. I will personally hand deliver all of these cards to Governor Romney.

Sincerely, Jim DeMint

And yet, you STILL won't criticize JD Hayworth who said THIS of Palin endorsing McCain:

BLITZER: You know that Sarah Palin who was his running mate says she's going to support John McCain and try to get him that nomination instead of you. How do you feel about that?

HAYWORTH: Well, I think we all understand the impulse of gratitude in politics and obviously Senator McCain, one of the decisions I applaud him for was putting Sarah Palin on the ticket. I think it gave great excitement to the Republican base and I can understand why she's coming here. But what's interesting, Wolf, in the social media, as I understand it, there's a new page on Facebook, Sarah Palin fans for JD but in the final analysis, it's not Sarah Palin from Alaska, It's Sarah Boyd in Scottsdale and others like her. Arizonans will decide who will be the next senator from this great state. And there's this gem from JD:

VIDEO:"I look forward to having Mrs. Palin's support following the primary on August 24th."

I won’t get into all the back and forth about Palin, but McCain is a known quantity and a betrayer. His middle name should be Judas. At least I get to vote in this one.

But “adoring mob?” What a snarky comment by these Newsweak idiots.

This needs to go viral............. McCain strikes again.

February 09, 2008 McCain pushes bill to improve health care......in Mexico!

What would Americans think, then, of a member of Congress who introduced legislation, not to improve health care in the United States, but to improve health care in Mexico?

Insane? Drunk? Unworthy of public office?

What would Americans think, then, of a bill introduced in Congress that required federal agencies to come up with a plan, not to expand health coverage in the United States, but to expand health coverage in Mexico?

Impossible? Unthinkable? Wildly irresponsible?

What would Americans think, then, of the motives of a senator, who not only introduced a bill to improve Mexico’s health care system andextend coverage to a growing population of 120 million people, but gave health insurance companies the right to help devise the plan?

Blatantly corrupt? Grossly indifferent to the well-being of the American people? Downright treasonous?

Unbelievable as it may seem, the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of 2005 contained a provision giving insurance companies the right to help devise a plan for extending US health care to Mexico (Sec. 1004. BINATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE AND HEALTH INSURANCE).

Even more unbelievable, the senator who sponsored the bill was not on the verge of being thrown out of office for this odious piece of legislation. No, the senator who introduced the bill, Senator John McCain of Arizona, was locking up the Republican nomination to be our next president

McCain denigrated conservatives during his "presidential campaign"....... all he did was stroll around and defend Obama.

I kept waiting for McC to trip and fall during his disastrous "town hall" debate------ballyhooed as showing McC "at his best." Watching McC mincing around the forum----he looked like an over-the-hill Home Depot guy working to supplement his SocSec. I kept wondering when he was going to start stirring the paint. His poll numbers dived the next day.

HOW 2008 CANDIDATE MCCAIN DEFEATED MCCAIN McC's nowhere campaign looked more and more like loser Dole's muddled bid.

AS IS SEE IT I though I'd crackup when McC whined on TV, "Obama broke his promise to me" (about campaign finance). Un-figging-believable that McC actually believed a Dem would keep his promise. Even worse, McC did not comprehend his public griping made him look like a naive tool of Obama. Not a very inspiring presidential picture there.

McCain was constantly crowing how he would "take on" his own party. McC actually berated a supporter on broadcast tv for bringing up the borther issue. Candidate Mc C really did say" you have nothing to fear if Obaba is elected."

McC surrendered his campaign to pukeneos----The Everything-For-Us-Nothing-For-Conservatives----crowd...the pukes delighted in religious cleansing of the Repub Party, and kicking to the curb the party's crucial conservative base. McC could not comprehend (and/or did not particularly care) his pukeneo associations were a huge turnoff to the crucial conservative base.

The pukeneos leashed-up McC like a pet dog. War hero McC was supposed to lay out the pukes case for Endless Global War. The very same pukes that duped Bush and lead the US over the cliff into the costly, bloody Iraq abyss. The pukes also stupidly pushed Bush and McC into amnesty.

=============================================

THE GHOULIANI/LIEBERMAN TURNOFF Conservatives were incensed that McCain allowed himself to be duped by conservative-hating pukeneos and RINOS (making the same mistakes as Bush). The sight of pukeneo stooges and gay/abortion worshippers---Lieberman and RINO Rooty Ghouliani---dominating McC was nauseating. The idea that these suckers would be active and visible in our government for another 4-8 years was a huge turnoff for conservatives.

==========================================

It isn’t hard to pinpoint when the whole bottom fell out for McCain. He was on a little roll after picking Palin. When the economic crisis hit, he made a big deal about going back to DC and suspending his campaign. Then he asked Obama to do the same. Obama laughed at him and McCain looked the old fool, because he did nothing.

What made matters worse, he voted for the pork-laden bailout of Wall Street when he didn’t have to. If he had stood strong against it, he could have looked like the winning maverick.

The economy sprung a leak while McC went out to sea----and his campaign strategy sunk. That stupid move of McC "suspending his campaign," as the bailout bill surfaced. Expectations were that he would have a plan at the debate a few days later--something to convince voters he was up on the problem. He succeeded only in tying himself to the sinking economy.

McC disasters unlimited...he was not prepared to run on anything other than "war hero." McC queered the deal with conservatives---hooking up with RINO creeps like Giuliani and (gag) Lieberman (Lieb sucked up to McC then wrote a $100,000 check to the Dems to protect his creds).

McC's sucking up to amnesty-pusher Hernandez (as Americans woke up to 5 million toxic mortgages fraudulently doled out to illegals that poisoned our economy).

Recently, Palin is making good money and probably that is where her heart is. Part of the average voters problem is actually believing our founders words, believing that politicians serve us and seek the good of all. Those who hold office long ago stopped believing in such ideas. Money, perks and power is what today’s politicians want and they will utter our fine ideas and words against us to obtain what they want. This woman may be the Elmer Gantry of conservative politics. McCain lost his soul years ago.

“I still believe McCain was a shill for “The Divine One.””

Well, McCain helped Obama in many ways, other than stating O would make a fine president.

McCain headed the Indian Senate affairs, and penned CFR. He helped Obama SO much. He excluded Indian tribes from giving amounts like everyone else, and then Obama cleaned up on the Indian $$$.

In fact, I can’t think of one piece of McCain legislation that wasn’t hand in hand with the democrats or that ever did one ounce of good for America. Can you?

[snip] Many of the tribes that have given the most to help Sen. Obama are rich with gambling revenue. They’ve used a loophole in campaign-finance law that allows one tribe to donate more than $200,000, unlike corporations or trade groups, which can’t give any money.

The Seneca Nation of New York, which operates casinos upstate, gave $213,000 to Sen. Obama’s committees, according to campaign-finance data compiled by CQ MoneyLine. Three other tribes have each given more than $100,000 to his campaign or to party coffers he is using to get out the vote: the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and two California tribes, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the Viejas Band.

The Indian vote, which has traditionally been overwhelmingly Democratic, could be pivotal in a number of swing states, notably New Mexico.[snip]

First, thank you for your service and welcome home. Second the PTSD was a joke response to your PDS comment. I came home unharmed and much more appreciative of liberty then ever. You ring up pretty easy for a Marine but I truly respect and bow to any Marine anywhere, anytime. If I offended you I apologize you deserve and have earned my respect.

Now to the Issue. I have been a great fan of Palin. Have an autographed book and have donated nontrivial dollars to her PAC and to her. My issue comes from seeing her save the election for John McCain a man I both honor and consider a treacherous politician harmful to the conservative movement. The other thing that has given me pause is her unwillingness to hardline on immigration. Wishwashy doesn’t look good on her I had hoped for better. There is still time and she is the least worse of the republican lot. I am, by the way, not a republican, I am a conservative I left the party after it started moving left, in my view, under Bush 1. I do not subscribe to blind loyalty except to my God, my country and the constitution.

PS I am Gen 4 Californian and it breaks my heart to see what has happened to our state. Fourty Six was the year of my birth by the way.

Have a blessed easter .... He is risen.

What you have to realize is that McCain won’t even admit that what he wants IS amnesty. He lies.

McCain actually had the nerve to say this a few days ago:

“President Reagan granted amnesty to two million people and that was wrong,” McCain said.

I know and I agree with you, however, the original poster, Breto, has apparently decided to duck the real questions:

“So whould you have said the same thing about Ronald Reagan?

Would your approach have been the same?

Remember, he was the first to not only propose Amnesty, but to get it passed. “
