American University Erupts Over Date Rape: Girls Who Drink and Go to Frat Parties Deserve Date Rape, Says Student Newspaper Columnist

Today begins Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention month -- and American University is in an uproar over an anti-feminist diatribe in the student newspaper charging that some women who survive date rape invited it.

"Let's get this straight: any woman who heads to an EI [fraternity] party as an anonymous onlooker, drinks five cups of the jungle juice, and walks back to a boy's room with him is indicating that she wants sex, OK?" columnist Alex Knepper, 20, wrote in the Eagle, the school paper.

"To cry 'date rape' after you sober up the next morning and regret the incident is the equivalent of pulling a gun to someone's head and then later claiming that you didn't ever actually intend to pull the trigger," he said.

You’re assuming “no” was uttered before the act.

True. And what these femi-nazi’s (RAINN) are doing is a real shame against legitimate rape victims who do not dress like sluts and get wasted at frat parties.

Forgive me for sounding insensitive (which means Im going to be “Insensitive”)...
If’n ya don’ wanna get shot- don’ weear a b’ar suit in the woods...get my meaning?
When did we stop teaching our daughters to act like ladies? If my daughter were going off to college, I think one of the first things I would tell her is NOT to go to frat parties and get drunk! Actions have consequences.
It’s called HORSE SENSE.

ANY girl who gets so drunk she doesn’t have good sense IS asking to be fornicated.

True—and young Alex is about to be crucified for it! What a sad comment on our society. :-(

He could have worded it a lot better. Simply saying that the her actions(going back to the man’s room after an invitation) are paramount to a verbal agreement, and that any actions taken, that are not protested, are in no way to be considered a “date-rape”. No still means no.

But if I were a man in college these days, I’d be audio taping any encounters to prove my innocence. Though that would be against the law as well in most stataes.

So in the end, what can you legally do to protect yourself as a male against a woman who cries rape the next morning, but was a willing participant the night before?

And you're assuming 'yes' was uttered as well.

If a woman is passed out drunk, or unable to speak due to GH, does that means she's open for business?

Dear God, where have we come as a society?

Does the same rule apply to men? How about a drunk man being raped by another man?

“Knepper, an openly gay political science major and a two-year columnist with the Eagle, is known as a provocateur, according to CASJC member Drew Franklin.”

I wonder if he thinks Matthew Sheppard was asking for it.

A terrible crime.

Yep. Frankly, I think that it's been trivialized on campuses and elsewhere in society.

Rape (or 'rape-rape', as Whoopi G'berg would put it) is a horrific crime that traumatizes women for life and those who commit it should be locked away forever. However, hollering "rape" because you regret what you did when you wake up the next morning, is equally horrific for the accused.

Ditto sexual harassment. "Sleep with me or you're fired" is horrible for the victim. "I overheard a joke that he told in breakroom when I was in a meeting room three doors over and I feel victimized for it", is a career limiter for the accused.

Unfortunately, there are many who don't make any distinctions, and who are all too ready - excited even - for the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and encourage others to do the same.

Simple. Don't have sex with her in the first place.

Uhhhh, how about being a man who has enough moral integrity and common sense and who knows better than to sleep with a slut even if she wants it?

This guy is just an idiot. I disagree that the women are asking for it — date rape does exist, and that some girl got drunk and cavorted with a jerk does not mean she deserved to be raped.

If she says no ... leave her alone. The fact that she accompanied you out of the party does not imply consent — though I am in favor of legal “implied consent” [which can be withdrawn] for marriages and longstanding relationships.

That being said, I do think “date rape” is an over-used term, and is often confused with drunken regret. If she consented at the time of the encounter, she can’t change her mind when she sobers up.

Plus, if an intoxicated woman cannot grant consent, neither can an intoxicated man. Thus, if an intoxicated couple engages in sex — both are guilty of offsetting crimes (having sex with someone who cannot consent due to intoxication). Drunken regret does not a rape make.

I didn’t assume anything. Another thing I don’t assume is to take one persons word over another. No gender has a better grasp on the truth over another. No one deserves to be raped. And no-one deserves to be falsey accused of rape.

My mother told me as I reached the age of going to parties, “there is a difference between rape and regret, learn the difference and take responsibility for it if it’s on you.”

That being said, I don’t care if I drink five cups of “Jungle Juice” and go back to a room. If I say no and get up to leave, you had better fracking stop.

And if you do drink and drive, don’t blame the car, the other passengers, the bartender, the other cars on the road etc for the wreck.

This article will bring out the knuckle dragging trogs. Already I see half a dozen posts using the “she deserved it” meme.

I’m sure one of Bill O’Reilly’s staffers is making note of this thread.
