BALTIMORE - The father of a Marine killed in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters from Kansas was ordered to pay the protesters' appeal costs, his lawyers said Monday.
On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

I don’t condone violence, but I am surprised that someone hasn’t gone postal on the Phelps gang.
Something is missing here. Did Snyder initiate a suit against Phelps to prevent him from attending/protesting the funeral? That is the only possible way I can imagine any judge having cause to look to Snyder to cover legal expenses.
I speculate that this is a demorat judge who has an inward hatred for the US Military. Just wonder who appointed him.
It’s time to set up a legal fund for this poor man.

I looked at the history of this case on appeal. Orders assessing costs against the losing party are common. When Phelps won, his lawyer (another Phelps) filed a request for costs. The Marine Dad’s lawyer filed his response, but filed it a week late, and offered no reason for why it was late. His response objected to Phelps charging $.50/page for producing 8 copies of a 3,800+ page appendix.
The court gave no reason for its order, so it could have simply decided to not consider a late-filed objection.
Hopefully, the Supreme Court will reverse the 4th Circuit’s decision to toss the $4 million verdict he received, and all will be well with him again. Why else would the Court have granted cert?
The United States is now officially “The Onion” or Scrappleface. Or is it “Alice In Wonderland” where everything is backwards?
The inmates are now running the asylum.

Fred Phelps.. sure looks like the Democratic Party disposition without the talking points. The union press just refuses to mention the Phelps’ long history in the Democratic Party (one son even leading Al Gore’s presidential efforts) in our state. The appearance of this underlying disposition is not unique to Phelps. There’s the Obama supporter who has just been arrested for multiple videos, the other death threats made against Congressman Eric Cantor; and then, what appears to be another Obama supporter who recently flew a plane into the Austin IRS building and an Obama supporter and educator who recently murdered her cohorts at a faculty meeting. And then we have are all those tragic murders in Chicago and the other big cities. How do you think the murderers and the officials that control those cities vote? The safe nation concerns of Janet Napolitano is nowhere to be found in those communities that slaughter their youth. Like the Phelps crew, I wonder how many family members are still working for the state government. Maybe I just don’t understand what government is really for. I get the disposition but the duplicity bewilders.
