Particle Weapons 101

WHAT KIND OF BEAM TO USE WANT?

There are two types of particle beams; the one used depends on what the weapon is used for, either exoatmospheric or endoatmospheric. Exoatmospheric are in conditions where there is nothing, like space or a vacuum tube. Endoatmospheric are in conditions where an atmosphere exists, like on Earth or orbiting Earth. For exoatmospheric use the beam that exits the weapon must be neutral, have no charge, to prevent beam divergence. Beam divergence happens when a beam of charged particles increases in diameter as it travels through empty space. This is not good. If the beam doubles in diameter before hitting its target, the damage to the target will much less than if the beam was the same diameter. As the beam diverges it transfers less energy per area unit to the target. Take light for an example, a light bulb produces a lot of energy in total, but a laser that produces the same total amount of energy can actually weld or cut through metal. The reason is because the light from the laser is completely focused on one small dot, as for the light bulb, its light is spread out to light up an entire room. So the narrower the beam the better, and since a neutral beam does not display beam divergence it is the beam of choice for spatial use.

The age old question: Phasers

Or Blasters?

We know light sabers are preferred

Actually, I am very impressed with the ones in the recent incarnation of “Star Trek”movie.

Particle beam weapons have been around a long time. But, they only worked in a vacuum.

TWA had an electron beam welder. I saw it 40 years ago. It could weld perfectly, completely through a joint between two pieces of solid titanium.

Russia had a neutron beam satellite weapon. Then we put up one, and so did several other of our allies. Made a good Mexican standoff for the past 30 years.

Now, some of our other ‘enemies’ are putting up their own particle type weapon satellites. Trying to throw off the ‘balance’.

We can’t complain much about them violating the space weapons treaty, because we are just as guilty.

No, be particular. Try the rye or choice.

The student who wrote this needs to give Dr Michio Kaku a call.
He's covered this in his Sc-Fi Science TV show:
Designing a Light Saber
and
Gamma Ray Burster

Dr Kaku is great. He could write a Particle Physics for Dummies book with nooooo problem. And going to his classes at CUNY would be the only reason I'd ever live in NYC. [Dr Michio Kaku]

My only 'problem' with him is he's an atheist. Says its because God can't be 'proven'.
Yet he believes in Alternate Universes, Time Travel and the String Theory - all 'not proven'. Go figure.

Actually, time travel has been proven. In fact, I've been doing it continuously for many years.

Yes, I believe you.
It's amazing what a Degree in Engineering will make one capable of doing.(1) As all the Mechanical Engineers I deal with seem to have Time Traveled back to 1955.

At least that's how their Project Specification Standards are written.
(Is 'Über Obsolete' a Technical Term?)

(1) Just teasin' ya. No Offense meant.

String Theory maybe.
Or more accurately 'Super String Theory' or ,'M Theory', but not Time Travel. (even if Black Holes do create Worm Holes getting to one is out of the question)

But my point was that most all physicists are atheists as they say God can't be 'proven', yet they do believe in theories that can't be 'proven' either, kinda paradoxical IMO.

That's one reason I like Einstein so much. He dismissed Quantum Mechanics because 'that world' is utter chaos and he refused to believe that God would create a Universe where two different Sets of Laws of Physics were needed to explain it. His General Relativity for the 'Large' and Quantum Mechanics for the 'Small'.

Maybe Einstein was wrong on 'QM' but when a guy like him believes in God you have to Root for him ;-)
