Pragmatic?
Illegals generally have very little education or skills. Some may be hard working, but they will not earn sufficient money to pay taxes—they will be in the bottom 50% of taxpayers who only pay 3% of the load and take in far more than they pay out.
Add to it the fact that they are/will be taking jobs away from Americans who are un/underemployed in real terms to the tune of 15-20% and there is absolutely NO NEED to grant amnesty. Freeing up illegal-held jobs for Americans will take many of them off the dole and prevent illegals from putting their entire families on the dole, which they undoubtedly do.
An employer crackdown combined with increased enforcement and border security (as a matter of national security) will solve this problem far more effectively than amnesty. We need to get back to a sane immigration policy which requires immigrants to demonstrate their value to our society, not their ability to evade detection.
The borders should be closed up for security reasons, but it will barely slow the illegals who are here for work and welfare reasons. To get them to stop coming, you need to turn them away when they apply for a job, when they try to rent housing, when they try to open bank accounts, when they try to put their kids in school, when they show up for medical treatment, when they are arrested for petty crimes, etc.
Close the borders FIRST. Limit Visas, periodically
check visas, if we can have NICS we can do the same for

Yeah, I’ll comment on that. They are criminals and should be treated as such. And, identity theft? Left me tell, you, friend, it is no picnic being the victim of identity theft. They got off lightly with five months “imprisonment.”
I repeat my comment. We could do it if we had the political will. (That means we don’t go all gushy when the illegals’ enablers and apologists trot out sob stories about “families being broken apart” and children being “orphaned” or “abandoned” if their parents are deported.)

What a crappy thing to happen. As you know the feds have failed in one of their Constitutional duties and it’s been going on for decades.
My heart goes out to that rancher’s family.
