In celebration of electricity and how much everyone appreciates this marvelous invention, cities across the world have been turning off their lights for one hour starting at 8:30 pm tonight (check your local TV listings). Clutching candles as the only means of light, earthlings learn to appreciate the only source of light before the invention of electric light. The cost to commerce and personal income from the hour long event can be fully appreciated in the video below when the electricity goes off.

I had all my lights, and reminded some friends too. If it wasn’t snowing, I would have idled my truck for a while and maybe burnt some stuff. Oh, I killed a squirrel too.

Earth hour is just a primer, I’m getting ready for the festivities on Earth Day. Got about 10 sacks of trash saved up for the burn barrel, bunch of wood that needs to be bucked, and everything with a motor will be run.

Don’t get me wrong. I totally LOVE our planet, as it is one of the most remarkable places we humans know of in our universe. At the same time, I detest the constant leftist planet worship.

Very well put. I agree, and am usually a stickler about turning off lights and in my work always look to make things more efficient. However, opportunities like this I don't pass up being an ass!

Not that I would have participated. I had ‘earth hour’ for about a week back in February when the snow knocked out the power. I fully appreciate electricity and all the comforts that come with it.

LOL For a time in my neighborhood, our side of the street would lose power on a regular basis. It's since improved, but we had one year where we had a particularly long outage in the winter, and another in the summer. I remember my neighbor leaning out her back door and shouting to me, "I woulda made a LOUSY pioneer! I just want a cup of tea, darn it!"

Hahaha, I agree. I would have made a terrible pioneer too! I just wanted to be home, warm, and be able to watch a movie. The ‘earth’ got it’s fair share from me in February. It’s on it’s own now.

If you need a lesson in what it will be like to be plunged into darkness

I don't know where the author lives, but I am reminded far too often what it is like for the lights to suddenly go out. Mine did it last weekend for about six hours. Either they don't have power failures in his world or he has a very short memory.

Left all house lights blazing, plus the three household computers, because consuming electricity generates more economic activity and helps employment.

I put every light in the house on, had the thermostat at 72, put on the three tvs in the house and drove down the block to the local pizzaria for a large pizza. Yup, drove just 1 block and back:-)

Yes, I participated. We turned on every light including the outside ones and turned on the dishwasher. I forgot the toaster, microwave and the blender. I promise to remember next year.

Sadly, I did participate. At 8:30pm, all the lights were off and the furnace was about 50 miles away from me. I was on a campout with about 500 boy scouts. THe only light was from campfires and lanterns. I turned in around 10:30, changed clothes by flashlight and curled up in a nice sleeping bag.

I’m sorry

We did everything freedumb2003 did, plus, leave the refrigerator and freezer doors open; also turned turned on the oven to 500 degrees, then turned on the flashlights, - and let the children play with the garage door opener.

Oh... we started the celebration at eight o’clock instead of eight-thirty. Gee, it was fun. We’re gonna do it at least once a month.

My wife always leaves the light on in every room she leaves. I follow her around turning them off because I’m a cheapskate and prefer it a little darker at night.

I will turn *everything* on (except that damn noisy dishwasher) tonight. Even the back porch light. Come to think of it, I better check that bulb...

Nope. If I’d have know, I would have turned on every light in the house, like last year.

I am saddened that I missed the 2nd Annual International Talk Like William Shatner Day.

GREAT idea! We can call it the anti-little-brainwashed-brats movement.

Every time I saw those sanctimonious (and, more importantly, ignorant) little pawns on TV talking about things they can’t possibly understand, I lit a 150 watt light bulb rather than curse the darkness.
