A new nonpartisan [see post 1 below for how nonpartisan this poll really is] nationwide poll shows that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is currently the strongest GOP presidential candidate for the 2012 election. The poll also shows President Obama leading all potential Republican candidates, but by narrower margins than he did last August. The poll was conducted March 17-20, 2010 by Clarus Research Group, a Washington, D.C.-based polling firm, using live telephone interviewers. It was based on a representative nationwide sample of 1,050 U.S. registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey was not sponsored or paid for by any client, candidate or political party.
OBAMA RE-ELECTION
In a head-to-head match-up, Obama leads Romney 45 percent to 41 percent with 14 percent undecided. Though still behind the incumbent, Romney has strengthened his position since last August when the Clarus Poll showed Obama leading him by a 47-38 percent.
Romney is the early polling frontrunner for the Republican nomination, said Ron Faucheux, president of Clarus. He has improved his standing against Obama and runs first among Republicans for the 2012 presidential nomination.
In the poll, Obama leads former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin 52 percent to 34 percent, close to the 53 percent to 34 percent lead he posted against her in August.
Though he continues to top all the potential GOP candidates surveyed, President Obama captures more than 50 percent of the vote only against Palin in the latest poll, said Faucheux.

This poll is about as nonpartisan as James Carville.
The Dems are desperate to shore up Romney as the GOP candidate and must have had this push poll in the can, knowing full well that Obamacare was going to sink him. They are desperate to rehabilitate him and to try to put across the ridiculous notion that Obama is invincible against Palin but would be in the race of his life against Mitt Romney! These push polls should be expected and should be dismissed for what they are: Democrat propaganda. Obama's only hope is to face off against Mitt Romney.
Let's take a little walk down memory lane (as RR used to say). On April 19, 1979, only 18 months before the election, the Gallup poll found Reagan trailing Carter by 52-38%, while the moderate Ford ran much better, trailing Carter by only 48-41%. In December, 1978, Carter's lead over Reagan was an even larger 57-35%, while Ford trailed by 53-39%.

The author of Obamacare has no chance in the GOP primary, period.
Wonder how much money he is paying to say this.
Exactly. They know that none of us would vote for him; they were successful in getting McCain as the candidate before, and I'm very much afraid they'll be successful in getting Romney as our candidate this time around.
The Dems are pushing your favorite Rino. Again.
Ping!
We need to concentrate on 2010 and ignore this crap out of the Dems trying to pick a candidate for 2012. These polls are beyond worthless.
President Harpy really liked these polls.
Pray for America and Gov Palin
The poll opens in pdf form only? Silly.
ROFLOL!!!!!!!!
“I’m very much afraid they’ll be successful in getting Romney as our candidate this time around.”
I don’t think so. Romney Care represents a pair of cement overshoes on Mitt in the GOP primary.
Romney will not be the candidates — we will be seeing new faces and any of the candidates from 2008 are going to be history.
"Never mind."
Yeah, after all, this administration isn’t all that much different from a McCain-Palin administration, right?
I agree. This is the guy the drive byes want because Obama will crush him.
NO FAIR!
We only worry about that kind of stuff when it's the Heritage Foundation or the Washington Times, then anything they say is automatically dismissed.
But anything that comes from a Lefty organization is completely credible and any attempt to discredit it is grounds for criminal prosecution.
Romney as a potential GOP candidate is a complete non-starter, as far as I’m concerned, and being as objective as I can be, is a complete and total waste of time and energy. His candidacy absolutely guarantees an 0bama re-election. The whole topic isn’t even worthy of discussion, it’s a disaster that should be rejected out of hand.
Romney = McCain redux!
The poll sample was probably taken in only Salt Lake City.
