If someone were looking to purchase a revolver (.357 or .41 Mag) or a semi (9mm or 45) what would you recommend? Budget < $700.00.

I have a CZ75B in .40 S&W. It’s probably the best gun for the money I’ve ever bought. In the early 90’s it was actually the first choice of sidearm for the SAS, but the British Gov’t didn’t want to contract with CZ until the political and economic situation in the former eastern bloc had stabilized, so they opted for Sig-Sauer instead.

Here’s another vote for a CZ-75B is you’re looking for the best bang for the buck. Proven design, very ergonomic for most people, and quite accurate out of the box.

” I had some pictures of guns,”
I sure hope you kept those pictures locked up and didn’t point them at anybody.

In developing his “ideal” sidearm, the Bren Ten, Jeff Cooper based the design on the CZ75. In the world of pistolcraft, it’s pretty hard to find a more ringing endorsement than that...

Yep, I’m sure CZ would rather have the ringing Cooper endorsemant than EAA/Tanfoglio’s “tribute”.

My friend
If safety is your number one concern, following comments do not be taken lightly.
The best jam free gun that you can purchase is a revolver. If a bullet does not fire when you pull the trigger, to clear the jam you just pull the trigger. This gun is 100% jam free. They can be used in the home, on the road, CCW, CTW, If you’re injured in a gunfight you can still use it. You cannot clearly gun jam with a semi automatic if you have been shot in one arm, especially if you have a level III are level IV jam.
If you’ve been involved in a self defense situation 2000 times, Jon Lott says you will only pull the trigger one time.
I like Smith & Wesson and Taurus 5, 6 or 7 shot 38 revolvers, and I like 8 shot 22 Magnum revolvers. My personal favorite is a lightweight titanium 38 Taurus.
I’ve fired tens of thousands rounds of ammunition. Most of the toys represented in this thread are semi automatic and when you’re in a gunfight you want an absolutely fail proof firearm, a revolver. Yes a revolver.
Do you want to own a firearm any woman can operate,a revolver, a revolver.
Get the picture?
A snobby nose 2 inch revolver which you can carry in your pocket or your purse.

This will get you killed in some neighborhoods, and when on the street CCW.
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use???
Proper holsters, and trigger guards will allow proper and safe transportation and carry. 90% of training classes fail to train in holster logic, types, why, whatfor, etc.

If you are prepared to "carry",
then you are ready to use the firearm.
then load it ! If the holster covers the trigger
then the gun in the holster is
pointed in a safe direction.
Training courses which cover holsters
are Personal Protection outside the Home.

My choice in carry is either the 686+ or 640. Both loaded with 125 gr JHP (HydraShok). The comp revolvers and semi-autos are for target shooting and hunting. The 640 with shrouded hammer and the heft of stainless steel is controllable with .357mag. It keeps the pocket fuzz out of the action too.

When I carry a revolver it's a S&W M642 in 38sp in a pocket holster for my right front pocket. In cargo pants it just disappears. Otherwise I carry an XD 45 compact or an H&K P30 9mm both of those in a Crossbreed super tuck deluxe. Most comfy holster I've ever seen in my life. Know what comp gun is awesome to shoot? An EAA Match piece with a comp in 38 Super. Add a dot sight and it's just a blast.

I own a few with comps. My favorite is the Glock 23C with a Jarvis barrel and 165 gr ammo. The comp does a beautiful job of equalizing the recoil. You can pick up your sight picture immediately. It would be a fabulous choice for a speed based competition. The S&W 500 Mag with 10.5" barrel has a competent comp on it too. My least favorite is my S&W 629PP in 44Mag. It is not a matter of correct operation. The port often flings particles back in the shooters face and ears. I've bloodied my left ear at the range. I had a similar experience with the S&W 460 Hunter. I attribute that to shooting .454 Casull with plated bullets. They simply start disintegrating out the way out of the barrel. You need a proper jacketed bullet to shoot safely with a comp in a high pressure application. The same load in a Ruger .454 Casull (Super Redhawk) performs perfectly. 2000 fps pushing a 200 gr flatnose plated bullet. Excellent for knocking down bowling pins at 50 yds.

I have the S&W 460 with the 5" barrel. I love that gun! I rarely shoot the "little" 45 out of it, because it's too much like shooting a 22. The 454 is more ummmm authoritative, but the real fun is that 460! When I light one of those off at an indoor range it usually shuts down the line for a moment. I don't care what else is going off on the line as long as it's not another 460 or a 500. That place goes dead quiet for a couple of ticks after the 460 speaks. LOL. I always wanted a gun that'd drop a Sasquatch or a T-Rex in it's tracks ... just .... well just because! My wife asked me "why on earth?" And my reply went like this: "Well Honey, we could be at the mall here in Miami FL and be attacked by a rampaging POLAR BEAR... you just never know. I know it's unlikely, but it could happen...." and so she had no real reply except to roll her eyes. Which of course said it all.

My daily carry: A Kimber Ultra Carry in 45. Small, but extremely accurate and very easy to shoot.
The wife carries a slightly fancier version: The Ultra Raptor!
