Dem Rep. Matheson to vote against health reform, again
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 3-20-2010 | Matt Canham

Posted on 03/20/2010 3:44:46 PM PDT by katieanna

Holding to form, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, announced Saturday that he would oppose his party's health reform bill, just like he did when the House version came up for a vote late last year.

Matheson, a conservative Democrat and leader of the Blue Dog caucus, said he is convinced the massive $940 billion bill would "leave our nation worse off."

"I am saddened that the year-long debate on health reform has resulted in legislation that is too expensive, contains too many special deals, does not contain health care costs and will result in increases in health insurance premiums and therefore I will vote against the legislation," he said.

Dems are imploding. Dems are imploding.

Pelosi does not have the votes, and she is basically out of time. This massive confusion at the end just can NOT be part of any plan. It indicates ... confusion.

At the end of the day, Dems on the fence are not going to vote yes on this bill if they think it’s anything other than a lock. A few of these guys might fall on their swords if they think their vote will surely change the outcome. But there are limits even to their stupidity.

None of these fence-sitters are going to commit suicide for no good reason.

Pelosi is losing her grip.

Chet, I was with you since August on this position, but Cantor and Boehner don’t seem to agree. They seem to think we can win this. It’s down to a handful.

Add Choice of OH as a flip to NO from YES.

Is that a new flip?

Question to all here on FR. Everyone is so opposed to pork, “special deals,” etc. What would you give the Stupak Seven to guarantee a no vote on this?

Clean hands with no blood on them.

"But I still can’t see Glenn Nye switching his vote to yes. If Nye votes no, then a Stupak group of six would be enough. "

I hope your right about Nye. RollCall is reporting that Stupak's goup (including himself) is down to six.

One more thing to remember about the Stupak group: of the ten that I have left in the group, only Lipinski and Kaptur are in solidly Democratic districts. Stupak, Berry, Mollohan, Donnelly, Dahlkemper, and Rahall all represent districts that lean Republican, and Driehaus’ and Costello’s districts lean Dem by 3 points or less. That means that, except for Lipinski and Kaptur, it’s in their political best interest to vote against Obamacare regardless of its disposition of the abortion issu

I live (part time) in central Ohio. Kaptur's district isn't too far from where I live, and I can promise you she's going to end up voting for this. She is as liberal as they come - right next to Sherrod Brown.

The only possible thing she could be angling for is more pork. The county-wide unemployment rates came out last week, and her home county was one of the highest in the state - perhaps the highest. She's looking for some bacon to bring home, IMHO. This has NOTHING to do with abortion.

Plus, she's in her 60's and has never been married, AFAIK. If you catch my drift.

I remember when a Federal Judge appointment could buy a vote.

I understand I will just call her him PAT. I live in MI and Stupak votes 85% of the time with the the libs so I think an Executive Order banning abortion will give him the fig leaf to vote for this thing.

On the other hand, if the President can craft an Executive Order that will satisfy Stupak, it’s all over — always has been.

EO can't undo or amend existing law, can it?
