CA: Whitman takes early lead over Brown (46% to 43%, 748 likely voters)

Republican Meg Whitman's months-long advertising campaign is buying the billionaire, first-time candidate a precious political commodity: name recognition - and a virtual tie with Democrat Jerry Brown, a veteran of 40 years in politics, according to a Field Poll released today on California's gubernatorial race.

Whitman, the former eBay CEO who has poured $39 million into her campaign, also continued to thrash her rival in the GOP primary, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. Among likely Republican primary voters, 63 percent preferred Whitman to 14 percent for Poizner.

Against Brown, the state attorney general and former governor, Whitman led 46 to 43 percent. The margin of error in the survey of 748 likely general election voters, taken March 9-15, was 3.7 percentage points.

The early snapshot of the race not only is bad news for Poizner but analysts said it could be ominous for Brown, who announced his candidacy March 2.

While both campaigns say Whitman's support is soft because voters aren't yet paying attention to the June 8 primary, analysts say Poizner and Brown may soon have to respond more aggressively to Whitman's carpet-bombing of airwaves that began last fall.

Brown supporters had hoped that the wealthy Republican candidates would weaken each other during the GOP primary through endless counterattacks. That hasn't happened.

Meg Whitman's campaign guru donated max to Obama -- while she advised McCain
"Even as former eBay CEO Meg Whitman acted as a high-profile backer and adviser to 2008
GOP presidential candidate John McCain, her top aide Henry Gomez -- now an eMeg
gubernatorial campaign majordomo -- donated the maximum to Democrat Barack Obama,
federal records show. Gomez, a trusted top insider in Republican Whitman's 2010 gubernatorial
campaign, donated the maximum $2,300 allowed to the general election campaign of Obama
in the days before -- and the weeks following -- the former eBay CEO's high profile televised
address to the GOP National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he accompanied Whitman around the..."

“Hard to say which is worse”

We need a Christie here in California. I have to agree it is a toss up.

No, I don’t think it is. What the idiot Whitman does will be done in our name. Screw that...

She’s another empty headed RINO that didn’t even vote until a few years ago. And her donations to leftists... hello Arnelda...

The RP RNC leadership in the state must be wetting themselves with with prospect of her being elected.

Count me one thoroughly disgusted California Conservative.

Count me with you. For the first time, I’m leaving that portion of the ballot blank. I can’t stand Whitman for various reasons, Romney protege and ruining eBay for sellers are the top reasons, but I can’t vote for Brown either. Our choices are horrible.

Here’s one conservative Californian and his family, that will not be voting for the Abortion-Loving Whitman if she makes it past the primary.

I’ll find an appropriate and actual conservative running from a third party before I’d ever vote for this Charlatan.

Yeah, I won’t vote for Brown either.

I was reading an article the other day, and in it was a short quip about Whitman being at a Global Warming summit at a certain point in time (recently). Boy oh boy, if that doesn’t make it crystal clear what she is.

Is it really fair to call Meg Whitman an idiot?

To become a billionaire is tough, you have to get some of the issues right. There’s not a lot of billionaires around.

Contrast that with being a millionaire, there’s lots who made it to that level and are still mind-numbingly stupid. But a billionaire? Yeah you can wail that she got a free ride on the Internet wave, etc. etc., but I think you gotta have at least some smarts to get to be the first female billionaire. At least she’s got lots of hands-on managerial experience - something Obama never had (and it shows!).

Not ready to choose her yet, but I definitely think it would be interesting to hear more from her.

She was the CEO of Ebay based on California so big deal.

You did not post her $283,000 in donations to the GOP in the past ten years.

Pozner donated more to the DNC and $10,000 to Al Gore to fight 2000 recount .And the pathetic wimp blamed his wife for there donations !

The sad thing about Whitman is that she is just one more airhead that thinks money equates to political savvy.

She didn’t care enough about our state or the nation to vote. She didn’t study the issues and go to the polls like you and I did our whole lives, but now she understands the political history of the state and nation enough to lead California? Nah...

All the propositions that you and I voted for, Whitman was MIA. Did she vote to replace our three California Supreme Court Justices? No. Did she vote for Prop 13? No. Did she study up and vote for or against any proposition in our state’s history prior to a few years ago, if then? No! Nothing about politics reached out to her enough for her to even vote prior to a few years back. Seriously, doesn’t that tell you something about the woman?

She didn’t vote for Reagan. She didn’t vote for or against any of our governors, unless it’s been in the last few years. This woman has a comprehension about politics that is less than five years old.

You can tell me she’s a business wizard, okay. I’m sorry, she could own every dollar in circulation and still not have voted, and my opinion of her would be very dim with regard to her becoming our governor.

Hell no...

Yup, I think we’ve all experienced politicians that proved that business experience does not equal political smarts (Hello, Ross Perot).

But this IS Kalifornia we’re talking about - and in the Land of the Blind, even a one-eyed man (or woman) is still King.

Let’s at least hear what she has to say.
