Gibbs: By next Sunday, healthcare reform will be 'law of the land' By Walter Alarkon - 03/14/10 09:59 AM ET
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the healthcare bill will pass by next weekend.
"We'll have the votes when the House votes, I think, within the next week," Gibbs said on "Fox News Sunday."
Gibbs added that those on next week's Sunday talk shows "will be talking about healthcare not as a presidential proposal but I think as the law of the land."
President Barack Obama will look to campaign on the new healthcare law in midterm elections, Gibbs said.
"We believe healthcare reform is going to pass, and once it passes we're happy to have the 2010 elections be about the achievement of healthcare reform," Gibbs said.
But Republicans on Fox said there's no guarantee the bill passes and that Democrats will benefit from it.
"If they pass this thing, I think they lose the House of Representatives this fall," said former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove.
If Democrats do pass it, "then the American people will be the losers," said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.).
"This is a trillion-dollar-bill attempting to overhaul healthcare for every single American," Cantor added.
The bill in its first 10 years will cost nearly $900 billion.
Cantor also criticized Democrats for talking about "bending the rules" by holding a single House vote that allows passage of both the bill passed by the Senate and a package of fixes. That move, under consideration by House Democratic leaders, would keep House members from voting on unpopular parts of the Senate bill, namely special deals that were included to win over recalcitrant senators.
"There should be in the minds of most Americans a direct vote on the Senate bill," Cantor said.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), a member of House Democratic leadership, dismissed suggestions the House will pass the Senate bill without a vote, but he left open the possibility of packaging the fixes with the underlying bill.
"We're going to have an up or down vote," he said.
OMG!
“...The real problem here...is the voting public...”
-
Amen to that.
No doubt there are more than a dozen lawsuits awaiting the bills final form. Maybe hundreds.
With this particular discussion of "how" the bill is being passed, I wonder if any of those will be for the "legislative process" of passing the bill (as is the complaint here with many). I mention that, because just yesteray, I was reading a thread from other FReepers that was saying that the courts don't get involved in the actual "legislative process" itself, being that they can do anything they want (actually) -- so I was wondering whether any of those cases would be on the "legislative process" -- that so many don't like (for how it's being passed).
If true, then by next Sunday hunting season opens.
Maybe this grinning fat boy needs to recalibrate his message.
The recognition of the problem also gives one the “answer” to it, too.
If it’s the voting public who is the problem, then it’s apparent that to change the type of government we have in this country — you must change the way the voting public thinks about it.
There’s the solution.
I'm pretty sure there will be lawlessness of the land afterwards.
John Adams, in 1918, speaking about the American Revolutionary War:
“The Revolution was effected before the war commenced.
The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people...
This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments,
and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.”
The list, ping
Even if this plan passes, we need a multi-pronged strategy to cripple and kill socialized health care.
1. Individual resistance. We must be willing to explore all legal vehicles to avoid participation as individuals. Will there be exemptions to participation for special groups such as the Amish and will this provide a loophole? Would creating an organization to disseminate information and protect individuals form prosecution be useful?
2. State efforts. We already have a VA state statute that protects citizens from the mandates. We must continue on with statutes and state constitutional amendments. See the progress at the Tenth amendment center
3. Federal legislation. Although securing victory in November in the House and Senate will be nice, it will only afford us the power to propose but also to investigate the 0bama administration. Investigate we must to weaken this tyrant to oblivion.
4. Courts. Take a page out of the liberal play-book and challenge this legislation form every conceivable approach under the sun. There are preferences for minorities to receive federal contracts and grants. There will be rationing, if any are done on the basis of age or disability we must claim violations of ADA laws. If the process to pass this legislation was unconstitutional (Slaughter rule),this will give rise to an immediate challenge.
5. Publicize. If anyone with Medicare, Medicaid or any other government program is denied care for any reason, complain to your Congressman and Senator and directly blame the government. The Dims and zero now own every problem and every mistake that occurs in the medical system from the time that zero signs this piece of crap into law. Keep them accountable!
6. Presidential race: 2012. All Republican candidates must state unequivocally that they will issue executive orders that cancel the health care law. They should and must do this because the law is simply unconstitutional. Any candidate that refuses does not deserve our support. After 2013, we can probably legislate away the health care law piecemeal. Eliminate mandates, encourage MSAs, allow states to set coverage mandates and allow cross state purchasing, real tort reform etc. By attacking the legislation piecemeal, it will be easier to achieve consensus and the needed votes in congress.
You are right. He is probably not bluffing and to pretend that he is will just mean we’ll let our guard down.
I know, they’re so stinkin cute they make me vomit
Gibbs was on Face the Nation this morning repeating the mantra, “This is the week to pass health care”, “This is the climatic week”, “This is it”.
LOL.....it’s the “This is it” tour for obama’s health care.
This is the question that is haunting many of us out here. When is enough enough?
I just don’t know anymore.
Part of the problem is that conservatives have not allowed their voices to be heard. For years, we have had civil rights marches, gay pride marches, environmental days, black history month etc. Not saying those things are bad, but conservatives have a message that needs to be sent. This past year is the first time that I have really seen conservatives group together in a protest group organized by tea party certainly not GOP. Talking about neighbors, yes it amazed me the number of upper middle class people who had Obama signs in their yards. I couldn’t believe it, will be interesting to see next election what shows up there. That is if Zero doesn’t have to provide proof of eligibility and decides not to run.
these BA$TARDS are looking for trouble...
My email to Mary Landrieu:
Senator Landrieu,
First let me begin by saying I am disappointed in your lack of ability to check your voicemail from your constituents, I was unable to leave a message and now I have to send you this email. Unlike you, Senator Vitter’s voicemail has been checked and I was able to leave a message for him.
Second, as a citizen of Louisiana I am embarrassed due to your criminal deal you received for us in the Healthcare legislation. You have NO RIGHT to take money from other states to fund this state. You should be ashamed.
Thirdly I want to make clear you do not have my support for this health care legislation. Both my husband and I are disabled OIF/OEF veterans and I can assure you ma’am that we did not fight and defend our country just to have politicians like you make dictatorial decisions such as you are attempting now. It will be my honor and my pleasure to fight you and this government’s strong arm tactics and you can count on all my brothers and sisters in arms both currently and in the past to fight you and ensure that you are removed from office post haste.
Your only redemption in the eyes of the Lousiana voters is to vote no on health care. Only this way could you possibly redeem your honor and the respect of the people of Louisiana.
I agree - a sound course of massive resistence now!! There are is only one courses of action left if the 2010 election are tapered with!!!
“Gibbs: By next Sunday, healthcare reform will be ‘law of the land’”
So it’s gonna be a 4:00am vote on Sat. morning?
