The WASP program was established during World War II, and from 1942 to 1943, more than 1,000 women joined, flying 60 million miles of noncombat military missions. I know that’s true.

Once I was driving home and ran into a sudden, strong sleet storm. I was sliding all over the road...sideways...before I knew what was happening. It scared me, so, after scraping the ice off my windshield, I crept down the highway to the next little town and found an open bank. I called my husband and then wondered how to get to a place to stay, as the bank was closing. A man, who was sitting to one side told me to follow him to the next, bigger, town where I could find a motel or a restautant to stay at until the storm past. I followed him...very slowly...till we got there. He then pointed out the locations, then drove off. I never got his name, but did get to thank him.

A Highway Angel.
I KNOW it.

My first flight instructor, in the summer of 1963, was a WASP — Virginia N. “Pat” Grant. She was a great pilot and a most excellent flight instructor.

In 1965, I came back to Jacksonville and thanked her for providing me with a strong basic aviation education which helped me earn my Navy Wings of Gold.

I’m glad the WASPs are finally getting the recognition they so richly deserve. Their exploits are the stuff legends are made of!

Muriel Martin spent four years helping train fighter pilots as a Women's Airforce Service Pilot, or WASP, during WWII. God Bless Texas lady pilots.

Great thread about those brave women. A lot of them were stationed about 95 miles from here in Sweetwater, Texas. I love to read about them! Thanks, Kathy!

We’re all tuned up and ready to go - DVR is set, ‘cause I’m sure the granddaughter isn’t going to want to watch it.
