The body of one of two men chased after a violent robbery at a small grocery Thursday night was found this morning at the Interstate 20-U.S. 61 interchange and authorities were trying to determine whether he was shot, jumped or fell from an overpass.
A second suspect, described, like the dead man, as Hispanic, was being sought by police in the robbery and assault at La Chiquita grocery store, 4002 U.S. 61 South, which triggered the chase and shootout.
Police received a call about the armed robbery at 8:41, said Sgt. Sandra Williams. The caller reported two Hispanic males entered the business wearing ski masks. One was carrying an SKS assault rifle, and the other had a handgun, Williams said.
After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, CDs and jewelry from the store, as well as a wallet and cash from a customer, the two fled the scene in a vehicle and headed north on U.S. 61 South toward Interstate 20, Williams said. A woman clerk at the business was hit in the head with the butt of a rifle during the robbery, then notified the store owner who jumped in his vehicle and chased the robbers, Williams said.
There was a chase on the highway, which resulted in the suspects crashing out on the bridge, she said. The suspects got out of their vehicle and started firing at the business owner. And basically, between the suspects and the owner of the business, there was a shootout. She declined to speculate on how many shots were fired.

You bet.
Wasn’t that a great State win? Sorry, could not resist.
I have to admit it. State wanted it more and it showed.
I didn’t know the State coach had a count down clock from day one until the egg bowl. I go to church with a BUNCH of state fans. I wore a maroon shirt to show my humbleness.
Snead will be a flop in the NFL. IMHO
“I dont advocate anarchy nor vigilantism, but I do believe we have the ability and authority to defend ourselves and assist in the apprehension of a criminal for delivery to legitimate authority for proper judgment”
It stopped being self defense when the owner started chasing the thieves.
“Once again you support what you complain about, vigilante justice.”
No actually I was taking issue with the store owner endangering innocent people by chasing the thieves and engaging in a gun fight.
Your argument is moot.
You are only warning people on FR if they hurt one of yours, you will kill them.
Some business owner who gets robbed and wants to chase and shoot is not going to pause and think “if I hurt one of driftdiver’s, he will kill me, so I better not go after them.
DOH well then that makes all the difference. So go wild man, go shoot anyone who steals from you and heck with the consequences to anyone else.
Note the conjunction.
Any citizen witnessing a criminal act has the authority to step in and bring the criminals to justice.
That’s not passing judgment, that is simply not aiding and abetting the criminal or condoning its commission by inaction, as advocated by those who seek to establish a police state en lieu of a state respecting liberty.
‘Any citizen witnessing a criminal act has the authority to step in and bring the criminals to justice.”
The crime was over and the threat gone. Any citizen does not have authority to chase down a criminal with disregard to other laws or the safety of those around him.
I’ve seen numerous cases where the person faced charges especially where the use of deadly force was involved.
I don’t think that is what I said.
You really sound like a gun grabber.
You really don't know anything about Mississippi. He'll get a medal.
I thought the chase and shoot out was kind of dumb.
I disagreed with another poster’s argument about what he would do.It was moot and didn’t need to develop.IMHO

The NRA publication “American Rifleman” has their “armed citizen”
reports with lots of happy endings when thugs end up drawing the
short straw from breaking into some innocent citizens house or business.
This story should get a separate “Successful Hot Pursuit” heading.
Along with information about how you might get a medal or a jail
sentence for bringing justice to thugs.
Depending on what state you live/work in.
As for this story...it reads like a case from Oklahoma City during the
sane days when Bob Macy was the state DA.
The OKC story?
A thug beat a security guard in downtown OKC, then grabbed a fellow’s
motorcycle.
As the thug tried to make his get-a-way, the citizen grabbed the
aged security guard’s pistol...drew a bead...and blew away the thug.
This was in downtown Oklahoma City, during the middle of the work-day.
DA Macy issued a public statement that the citizen did a public service.
By dispatching a thug with a very lengthy criminal record.
No grand jury.
No “wrongful death” suit by the thug’s family/friends/etc.
It was a better, simpler time.
Do the crime, do the time. And sometimes, that’s eternity.
“
Dont know about miss. law, but I wouldnt be surprised to see the
Store Owner charged with something
“
I don’t know about MS specifically.
But I’d say that if this happened in Minnesota (where my brother went
to get his grad degree)...the business owner would probably go to jail.
In Texas (and probably in my former home state of Oklahoma)...
no indictment IF a grand jury is called.
And if a grand jury was called...very high odds that a grand jury
would effectively say “the b@$tard had it coming”.
And the business owner would become a celebrated citizen.
Thugs need to learn a general rule: commit your crimes above the
Mason-Dixon Line.
So you or your survivors might collect mega-millions via the legal system.
Just my two cents from my time in OK, TX, CA and MN.
Have you considered the potential damage the robbers might do if they were not stopped? They already demonstrated an indifference to the persons and property of innocent citizens. If they get away, they have been rewarded for their actions.
It seems likely to me that the potential for future damage is far more if the robbers get away than if a citizen pursues them.
When the citizens are actively involved in stopping crime, and cooperative with the authorities it becomes very difficult for criminals to continue committing crimes against persons.
“Have you considered the potential damage the robbers might do if they were not stopped? “
Sure which is why I’ve said repeatedly he should have shot them while they were in his business. Having a pissed off poorly trained wannabe go chasing after armed criminals and engaging in gun battles on the street is not a low risk affair.
“It seems likely to me that the potential for future damage is far more if the robbers get away than if a citizen pursues them.”
They’d likely steal again if not caught. Compared to a high speed accident likely involving a family or stray bullets on a crowded street that seems like the better of the options.
“When the citizens are actively involved in stopping crime, and cooperative with the authorities”
Citizens engaging in high speed chases and gun battles is a crime in most places. This guy must have connections because he would almost certainly have been arrested in Florida. One of they examples given to CCW holders by the State of Florida is a very similar case. Its an example of what NOT to do.
yep I’m a gun grabber. I’d grab my gun and shoot them as soon as they threatened my life. dufus
“Theyd likely steal again if not caught. Compared to a high speed accident likely involving a family or stray bullets on a crowded street that seems like the better of the options.”
They perpetrated an active armed robbery where they assaulted a store employee by hitting her on the head with a rifle butt.
I respectfully disagree with your assessment of potential risks.
