[history]
A Navy captain turned the Pacific into the world's strangest drag strip -- ordering two warships to stage a bizarre race that one sailor said nearly ended in tragedy, a high-ranking military official told The Post yesterday.
"Multiple witnesses interviewed by the [inspector general] and the commanding officers of both ships all stated that the ships were racing," said Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis.

I’ve been on a Tico class CG that was at least that close to an older DDG after an unrep evolution... Until the Capt. spooled up the turbines, bit in the prop pitch, and we left the DDG behind like it was tied alongside. ;-)

When you race you race for the Pink Slips. Loser looses the mode of transport. So besides a Career what else was lost?

But of course.
If the race had been the only thing, she would have gotten away with it. Plenty of ships “race” and if the guys like their Captain, it never gets out.
But I understand she was despised by the crew. Not a nice person. Word travels fast in the Navy.

After getting a lead in the race the destroyer McCain veered to the left. Typical.

Given the charges she was convicted of S&M seems like a safe bet.

That sounds like fun. I had an S3 pilot as one of my students at Southwestern College. The phrases "whistling shit cans" and "hoover" come to mind.

The Enterprise could run away from the escorts, no doubt. How fast could she go? (Flank speed)

So what! At least we still have some Navy ships to race to the next earth quake victims in the world and then they all can stand at the UN and call Americans “arrogant bastards” and “selfish.”
I hope they do it again, keep up the competition for the best served ship in the world!
