[history]
A Navy captain turned the Pacific into the world's strangest drag strip -- ordering two warships to stage a bizarre race that one sailor said nearly ended in tragedy, a high-ranking military official told The Post yesterday.
"Multiple witnesses interviewed by the [inspector general] and the commanding officers of both ships all stated that the ships were racing," said Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis.

I don’t think they want to know what we used to do in F-4s & F-111s...

Several careers ended, I am sure - the juiciest thing in Naval History since the Cat Futch Incident!

One of the ships was skippered by Capt Holly Graf, who was recently relieved of command for abusing her crew.

Don't know, don't care. But obviously not someone who should be in command of anything larger than a one-man rowboat!

I admire a Navy Captain with a sack. I cringe at the thought of a seaman ratting her skipper out for getting within 300 feet of another ship. UNREP must be hell for twits.

So the CO of Cowpins lost command due to this, not using the “F-bomb as earlier stories noted

Not nearly as dangerous as a DD or even a CG refueling under weigh from a carrier. Or an ammunition ship transferring bombs and missiles to a carrier while under weigh.
And those are not so dangerous as landing on the carrier at night.

Sorry, I don’t see the danger here. Is the ship in the lead going to throw on the brakes? This might be an issue if the trailing vessel was closing at a crazy rate.
