I don’t think they want to know what we used to do in F-4s & F-111s...

One of the ships was skippered by Capt Holly Graf, who was recently relieved of command for abusing her crew.

Not nearly as dangerous as a DD or even a CG refueling under weigh from a carrier. Or an ammunition ship transferring bombs and missiles to a carrier while under weigh.

And those are not so dangerous as landing on the carrier at night.

Sorry, I don’t see the danger here. Is the ship in the lead going to throw on the brakes? This might be an issue if the trailing vessel was closing at a crazy rate.

"At one point we nearly hit the McCain's fantail when the ships came within 300 feet," the shaken sailor, whose name was withheld, told the Web site"

So whimpered the squealing little wuss - "near miss" racing along at a 'speed' of 35 miles per hour - they came with 300 ft of one another - ummm - yeah, that's frightful...

I’m a land lubber, except for dive boats. But It’s not apparent to me from the photo that a near tragedy is depicted. It looks like a photo of one boat from the bow of another. Perhaps the wakes indicate something that isn’t obvious to the untrained eye. Is this a shocking photo to you experienced sailors?

I don't know if this applies to naval vessels but I always enjoyed this sailor's proverb: Any two boats that are within sight of each other and headed in roughly the same direction, are racing.

I was aboard the USS Enterprise and on our way back from the Tonkin Gulf and heading to San Francisco we raced the escorts. That is when I found out how fast a nuclear powered carrier can go. I was surprised. So not an uncommon occurrence.

But Graf, the first woman ever to command a guided-missile cruiser, was separately found guilty of "cruelty and maltreatment" of her crew and conduct unbecoming an officer.

Anyone want to guess her sexual preferences?

Normal for military vessels to have a little races in the open oceans. The sailors get a kick from it.
