[history]
A Navy captain turned the Pacific into the world's strangest drag strip -- ordering two warships to stage a bizarre race that one sailor said nearly ended in tragedy, a high-ranking military official told The Post yesterday.
"Multiple witnesses interviewed by the [inspector general] and the commanding officers of both ships all stated that the ships were racing," said Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis.

But Graf, the first woman ever to command a guided-missile cruiser, was separately found guilty of "cruelty and maltreatment" of her crew and conduct unbecoming an officer.Anyone want to guess her sexual preferences?

That's not close.
Close is when you can hand the other shipmates a few beers.

Normal for military vessels to have a little races in the open oceans. The sailors get a kick from it.

There were other charges she was convicted of including ‘cruelty and maltreatment” of her crew’. There are enough a$$holes in the Navy, I personally met several hundred of them. The Navy is better off without her.

My thought exactly.
If our forces live with caution too long, they may freeze when the poop hits the fan.
Take the girly-boy who ratted out his CO. Is this what we want in our fighting men and women?
Better to let them test some limits now so they can perform that much better when the time comes...

“And those are not so dangerous as landing on the carrier at night.”
Did 3 hours on the S-3 simulator at North Island a few years ago when my nephew, a commander, was stationed there.
On my first 3 attempts I wiped out on short final since all my hours were in my own plane with the throttle controls in the center console and I cross controlled between the stick and throttle.
I made the next 7.
The best part was flying the whole San Diego area including flying under the Coronado Bridge.

The ship is named after Sen McCain’s Father and Grand Father, both of whom were 4 star admirals.

Odd they are making a big deal out of drag racing. When ever our destroyer squadron put to sea, we would always practice maneuvering as a unit. 70%-80% of the time, the final maneuver was a line abreast at top speed (aka a drag race)
