A Navy captain turned the Pacific into the world's strangest drag strip -- ordering two warships to stage a bizarre race that one sailor said nearly ended in tragedy, a high-ranking military official told The Post yesterday.
"Multiple witnesses interviewed by the [inspector general] and the commanding officers of both ships all stated that the ships were racing," said Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis.

I got snowed in at work one sunday evening. The car was on nearly dry pavement. Unfortunaley there was a 6 foot drift in front and a 3-4 foot one behind. What was my fault was that I tried to batter my way through the one in back. Might have worked with a front wheel drive, but I was driving a '62 Pontiac Tempest, with transaxel and drive wheels in the rear. Resulted, somehow, in a broken distributor cap. Dad came and rescused me, even though I was no longer living at home. He walked in from the arterial street, then took me to the parts store after we figured out the problem. The Tempest was really a pretty good snow car. It was about the size of a Corvair, and used it's transaxel, but had 15" fairly skinny tires, like a VW Bug. It could easily break out onto the arterial street after the snow plow had cleared it, but before they had come back and removed the blocking pile of packed snow from the side street. The Bug was good at that too, but could more easily get high centered.

Why is that dude wearing a female officer’s cap? Doesn’t he know he can get into trouble for that?
Two captains, tasked with operating under extreme conditions (war), had a little fun during practice (peace); nobody & nothing was hurt save the egos of a few bureaucrats. I fail to see the problem here. Anyone care to clue me in?
Or like the airline pilots who were delayed when a B52 was allowed to land ahead of them after one engine went out:
"Oh no, the dreaded 7 engine landing".
I thought that story was told from the perspective of a single engine fighter pilot who was experiencing engine problems, and they let the 52 land before him.

Cruelty, and maltreatment nowadays is telling a sh!tbird to start “bends and thrusts, ‘til you dig to friggin’ China!”.
I never had any respect for a skipper who wouldn’t get in troops face, and no respect for the NonCom who allowed the situation.
P.C. has no place in the military.

Only been stuck once and that was in sand. I learned the trick later on how to never get stuck again. A lesson learned a tad too late.
There are reports regarding her shiphandling during unreps. Not good. During the “drag race” incident she damn near rammed the McCain.

“On 3 December 2010, a board of inquiry, by a vote of 2-1 found she [Captain Holly A. Graf] had committed misconduct; by unanimous vote, it found she had committed conduct unbecoming of an officer for the maltreatment and cruelty toward her crew as commanding officer of the Yokosuka, Japan-based cruiser Cowpens.
“The panel unanimously voted to recommend she be separated from the Navy with a general discharge and be allowed to retire as a captain for completing honorable service “for a period of no less than six months” at that rank.”
PC is still at work, here you will note. She was not reduced in rank and was allowed to retire. That is a damn shame — Portsmouth Naval Prison would have been a suitable capstone to her “career.”
I don’t think UNREP operations are done at flank speed. Graf was already known to be a poor ship handler, in fact she got in some spots that would have gotten any other commanding officer relieved. She got away with it because she was a woman, and she had connections with a feminist flag rank officer.
