The local economic forecast tied to President Barack Obama's proposed NASA budget keeps growing bleaker.

Revised projections now show that about 23,000 workers at and around Kennedy Space Center will lose their jobs because of the shuttles' retirement and the new proposal to cancel the development of new rockets and spacecraft.

How's that Hopey, Changey stuff?

Regardless of how people feel about NASA and our space program, the fact is this will devastate the local economy here. As if it hasn't been devastated enough the last few years.

Lots of small businesses here depend on space workers buying stuff.

Obama isn’t concerned about Florida. My extra foil is on order.

Why can’t the shuttle program be sold to the Chinese? That way it still operates and they could outsource back to local vendors. /SARC

“Another decision the prez did not think through.”

I wish that were true, but I think he makes VERY deliberate choices.

NASA would get all the money they want if they’d just affiliate themselves with ACORN

I am one of the folks at JSC (contractor, of course) who will lose his job due to ObamaSpace. I am just glad I am in Houston, because there is a large city near at hand to absorb excess engineers. And I do *NOT* intend to look in aerospace. Anyone that wants an engineer that can write is good by me.

I was not aware that NASA was a jobs program.

Everything he touches is a disaster. He and his staff know exactly what they are doing. One more way to make our country vulnerable. . .his way of leveling the playing field. He doesn't want the US to be the strongest country in the world.

Imagine the cost of getting our space program up to speed when he is out of office.

Not to mention crushing dreams of little boys who want to be part of NASA someday. My 5 year-old loves visiting the Space Center - little did we know the last time we went that it would become a relic program in the coming years :(

It’s truly a travesty for the employees, the US as a whole, and all those who are fascinated with space and science.

We had $1T to spend to stimulate the economy.

We could have pumped it all out to Main Street by funding a Space Program, upgrading government computer systems, and by building a wall on our southern border. High-level technology jobs, mid-level technology manufacturing jobs, low-skill ("shovel-ready") jobs. Get people working, get dollars flowing through their hands and into the retail stores near where the workers live. It would have been easy.

But Obama decided to buy votes instead.

We are spending a trillion on a porkulus bill, but can’t find money for NASA, the F-22, the F-35, more c-17’s or settle the tanker program.
We are going to end up a powerless third world country.

I would hope that little boy's dreams would be to work in the private sector, not a government agency.
