The familiar statue of Andy and Opie that greets those passing by the Surry Arts Council building on Rockford Street has a noticeably different look due to being painted red and green during a weekend vandalism.
Its very disappointing, Arts Council Executive Director Tanya Jones said Monday of an act that will require a huge expense to correct.
Its disheartening that youve got people out here in the community that would do that, said Lt. Jeff Inman of the Mount Airy Police Department, which is investigating the crime. Its a childish-prank kind of thing.

Which Andy & Opie are depicted? A&O circa 1963 or that grotesque pair that endorsed obama in 2008?
Painted red and green?
Me suspects the vandalism was “hecho en Mexico”
Circa 63. Statue Andy is wearing his sherrifs uniform
Is nothing sacred!!!
“Which Andy & Opie are depicted? A&O circa 1963 or that grotesque pair that endorsed obama in 2008?”
...precisiely! Do what you want to the 2008 version! I’ll just pretend those 2 fools never endorsed the boobOTUS and continue to live in 1961 with the Andy & Opie I love!
Andy and Poopie?
Okay, I don’t exactly like that Andy and Ron endorsed Mr. Awesome, but seriously...who hates Andy and Opie?
excellant...TV show was good..actors are pure evil!
Obama-maniacs.
Andy and Opie’s commercial for Obama hurt our cause, like a sucker punch by a friend.
I don’t care about their statue.
I WILL treasure the tv series, filmed before they went nutso.
Ole Andy campaigned for the wildly unpopular (even for a democrat) Gov Beverly Purdue.
Looks like someone was trying to Jokerize ol’ Andy.
I met the man at the Lost Colony outdoor theater on Roanoke Island
He came by and set with us a while, asking about why we were there and were we coming to see the production later in the evening.
The kids were awe struck
Joker?
Ernest T. Bass
That is not true. I think you are thinking of Howard Stern endorsing Obama.
