Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits.
Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed.
Call them the new poor: people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives -- potentially for years to come.
Yet the social safety net is already showing severe strains. Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration's proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department.
Here in Southern California, Jean Eisen has been without work since she lost her job selling beauty salon equipment more than two years ago. In the several months she has endured with neither a paycheck nor an unemployment check, she has relied on local food banks for her groceries.
She has learned to live without the prescription medications she is supposed to take for high blood pressure and cholesterol. She has become effusively religious -- an unexpected turn for this onetime standup comic with X-rated material -- finding in Christianity her only form of health insurance.
"I pray for healing," says Ms. Eisen, 57. "When you've got nothing, you've got to go with what you know."

Hope and Change.
I pray too, I pray we get a Strong fiscal Conservative in the WH, and in Congress we elect many and dump the RINOs and Dems on the street where they belong. AMEN
The man and his progressive allies are plundering the nation's wealth and putting our children in economic bondage.
They should be charged, convicted & jailed IMO.
Even the welfare classes are mad, because he’s not moving
fast enough for them.
Good article, thanks.
“Hope and Change.”
Yep, Obama has caused 8,000,000 people who lost jobs to hope something will change.
30 years ago, the average family had 1 income. Now, the average household has 2 people working and in many instances that is not enough.
People used to be able to take vacations, now “staycations” are being pushed.
Now there is talk of the govt taking over 401ks.
God hep this nation.
What did you expect when the voters allowed the Barbarians inside the gates to pillage and loot the treasury?
Welcome to the ‘New Normal’!
The CBO stated that 60% of the lost jobs are gone permanently. Does anyone here see the younger generations ready, willing and able to rebuild after the ‘progressives’?
Memo to Zero:
Thanks for building an army for the Tea Party Movement.
Torches and pitchforks at the ready.

Not so funny now, is it ?
dirt floors, grass shacks and no food for the kids
Unfortunately 53% of those participating in the 2008 election, including several brain-dead members of my extended family, did not.
Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount,....
And deconstruct this:
Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions,
Imagine that - a 45 or 50 year old man with a home mortgage, kids to put through school, as well as a retirement to provide for, won't take a min wage job at McDonalds & instead continues to search for a job that gives him something close to what he needs to stay out from under the Main St bridge.
This Robert Ringer guy is an observer of the human condition and motivational speaker?
Which makes them dependent on the government, doesn't it? Which motivates them to vote into government the ones who promise the most government assistance, doesn't it?
The intention is not, contrary to Marx, to eliminate the middle classes, it's to capture them. In a situation in which one either works for the government or takes assistance from the government, there is no escape, nor is there intended to be. Add to that the necessity of going to the government for medical needs and one has a perfect storm of control. This isn't paranoia, this is absolutely what the socialists within the Democratic party are after. The only winners in this little scenario are the ones who are running the game. And that's where they come in. It's for our own good, dontcha know.
