COVINGTON -- Duncan Dohmen wants people to notice the pistol he carries.
He isn't a police officer and tells people that when he's asked. He likes these chances to educate people about a right afforded them 219 years ago -- a right he fears could be stripped.
"Rights not exercised are rights lost," said the 68-year-old resident of Covington in King County. "... I was walking around for 18 years with a pistol secretly concealed and it alarmed nobody. Then I realized that (openly) carrying a pistol might cause questions."
So for the past two years Dohmen has openly worn his Smith & Wesson 1911 model .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol. He's an active member of the Open Carry movement and takes any chance he gets to talk about the right to bear arms under both the U.S. and Washington constitutions.

Instead of a 1911 why not go full bore and strap on a .50 caliber Desert Eagle?
Of course, being a lib, when faced with logic, she didn’t have an answer.
It’s always been really frustrating when she brings up some easily refuted opinion on an issue. You can logically walk her through from her opinion/position to a conclusion she doesn’t agree with, then she’ll say she didn’t have that opinion to start with.
We’ve given up. Not much real thinking going on there.
Poll to FReep at source.
The lie below is the reason he was arrested felony style. It never occurred to the shaved apes that if he was waiting there for them, he probably isn't doing anything wrong. Yes, based on emotion, not facts. Seeing the quote below, I'd like to see a picture of the managaer---just sayin!
According to police reports, the McDonald's manager said that when she asked Dohmen to leave because of his gun, he tapped the holstered pistol and told her, "Bring it bitch."
It’s good that folks like him are around to exercise their rights. If you don’t exercise them, they’ll be gone. I wish Florida had an open carry law. It would be nice to not have to dress around my pistol. I would also like to carry my Springfield XDM, but it’s too big to conceal easily.
She’s remarkably imune to logic.
Don't ask - Don't tell.
I would also like to carry my Springfield XDM, but its too big to conceal easily.Dress around my pistol,,, so many have said that.
The fact that some states do not have open carry has helped to make for a shortage of .380 ammo and several new models of semi-auto .380s on the market now.
A .380 is not the perfect self defense firearm, but it is better than a 1911 or a 44 mag that is left at home in the gun safe.
Open Carry should not be infringed.
Glocks are very, very ugly guns, IMO. I love guns, in part, because many are works of art. The 1911 is a classic design and still looks good after all these years!
But the police did not come for 48 minutes. By that time, Zimmerman was dead. Her fiance found her body.
Wow, when seconds count the police are only 48 minutes away. Very sad story.
Good point, thanks for that.
The Brittany Zimmerman story should hit anyone between the eyes.
If it does not, she is indeed beyond help.
Indeed. People assume the police are only 2 to 3 minutes away. But you might be surprised at how many of these long-term (10 minutes of more) happen each year.
48 minutes was indeed an outlier, but even if this happens “only” once every 2 years, God help the people relying on 911.
I do not understand the love people have for Glocks, when they could have bought a 1911. Glocks work and are very reliable.....but they are also ugly as hell.....even to Glock fans I have talked to. Personally, I like to take some pride in what I have on my hip.
I’m withholding judgement here. I know the McDonalds owner and Prosser is a very conservative area. The restaurant and shift managers are just about always reasonable people in the franchise. just waiting to hear more.
Even that can be an eternity, and even more than enough time to be killed or seriously injured.
The right to self defense is inherent, too bad there are so many restricions on the tools to exercise it in this Country.
F'em all
Something like 22,000 laws en total. And from all of thethugs who have guns, looks like they are working/sarc
Excellent. One of the things I love about Freerepublic, local knowledge. Please report back with your findings when you learn more.
You used to have to show your gun, but people wanted to be able to keep a gun in purse or glove compartment, so when they passed the law that you can conceal a gun, they somehow lost the right to show your gun. You used to see pick up trucks with rifle in back window clearly visible.
