VANCOUVER – From horse-racing conflicts to shuttering the big screen at Mellon Arena, NBC has given hockey fans as much anxiety and anger as watching Jay Leno sit in Conan's chair.
The latest affront to puckheads: The U.S. vs. Canada men's preliminary-round showdown Feb. 21 won't be shown on NBC, but on cable's MSNBC at 7 p.m. EST. Instead, the Peacock will bring fans an exhilarating night of ice dancing, women's speedskating, men's freestyle skiing and men's giant slalom – rather than what amounts to an NHL all-star game on an international stage.
To the surprise of no one, NBC's getting torched for this: Outspoken player agent Allan Walsh tweeted that it was "disgraceful, and Chicago Now called it inexcusable: How can the NHL cancel their all star game and postpone their season for two weeks to accommodate the Olympics without getting any major network attention during the Winter Olympiad?

That was the next best thing to beating the Ruskies on the battlefield. Thirty years later I remember it like it was yesterday.

The Peacock network (that has Olby in Vancouver) is bumping USA v. Cananda on 2/21 to msnbc.
I am going to have to find msnbc on my cable...what a diss. Sid the Kid is the huge Canadian draw...and they bump his first big game after the Guins Sunday afternoon games prove to be ratings draws.

Olcyk I like, dislike Emrick but you get Pierre Maguire, he’s one of the best. Well, the reason why I dont like Emrick he keeps ‘educating’ people about hockey every 10 minutes when American viewers are knowledgeable about the game.

Actually this is the first year that ice dancing will be exciting to watch. The USA has two teams that may medal. And, Meryl Davis and Charlie White are FANTASTIC!!!! They smoke up the ice.
Besides, with cable channels, it makes sense to cover an entire hockey game on a cable channel, and then cover multiple disciplines on the main channel. They can always break into their coverage if the hockey game gets really close at the end and simutaneously broadcast the ending.

Seriously - ask anyone over the age of 35 (and plenty of people younger) what the greatest moment in Winter Olympics history was, and the answer will be the Miracle. Hell, you’ll get usually the same answer if you ask about the greatest moment in the last 50 years of sports.
Also, it included the greatest call in sports history, made by none other than the host for NBC’s daytime 2010 Olympics coverage, Al Michaels. Maybe they ought to have him call the game, seeing as how it is one day before the 30th anniversary of the Miracle.
The Canadian women just put a smack down on Latvia, which was broadcast on CNBC.
Set a few Olympic records. Final score was 18-0!
I’ve been kind of shocked by how little of the Olympics overall they’re actually showing. I mean I know they’re projecting to lose money but will the really lose less by having huge gaps with no olympics being shown? Hard to sell ad time in an event you aren’t bothering to show.
I agree. Also, I was just thinking that, last I checked, Al Michaels works for NBC and is part of the Olympics coverage. Putting him on in place of Emrick be a hell of a way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Miracle.
Olympic hockey rules are a bit stricter than NHL rules.
Geared more towards skill, and the ice surface is larger.
Also, fighting gets you ejected immediately.
I want Al Michaels calling the medal rounds. It’s beneath him calling the qualification games..yes, he’s that special. And I dont mean that in a bad way.
They’re actually playing on an NHL-size rink this time around.

So the NHL was convinced to postpone their season for the Olympics, and they expected what? That NBC/Obama would do right by them for their sacrifice?

The Canadian team is loaded, and it’s Sid’s first time in the Olympics.
There’s going to be a lot of talent on the ice! The only problem is that I was invited to sit in a suite at the Hershey Bears game that night!
Guess I’ll have to record the game, because I’m not missing free beer & food, and a live hockey game with friends!
