WHNT NEWS 19 Staff Reports 4:37 PM CST, February 12, 2010
HUNTSVILLE, AL - There are reports of a shooting at UAHuntsville, at the Shelby Center. We understand the campus is in lockdown.
Sources close to the investigation tell WHNT NEWS 19 two people were killed and two are in critical condition. We understand two people are in custody, possibly a woman and her husband. They're not sure if there are other suspects out there. We've also been told all the victims are faculty.
Another massacre of the compulsively disarmed.
Don’t blame you for leaving it. I could never survive in that environment. It’s bad enough where I am.
That is what my daughter said. We always think something like this happens somewhere else until it hits home. This comes after that school shooting.
Very close to home here too. My alma mater. Prayers for the victims, their families, and all of UAH.
I am not sure if the tenure process is the same for all school. Anyone know?
Most place you choose to apply for tenure or not. You aren’t forced to apply. If you apply and then don’t achieve tenure status (jump through all the hoops), you lose your job. That is why people freak out when they don’t get tenure. Basically it means you’re fired.

I think I heard Biology Dept.
<Reports coming in that a professor that didnt receive tenure went postal.
Wow. I am up for tenure in another couple of years. I wonder if I should post this article somewhere in the department?
I hate to say it, but when I heard it was a middle-aged person, rather than a young punk w/a gun, the first thing I thought of was ‘someone didn’t get tenure.’ Jeez.
I know a lot of FReepers don’t like tenure, but that’s the current process and when people work hard and don’t get it, it’s devastating. That said, there can be politics in a tenure decision - racism, gender issues, etc., that may make people go ‘postal’ when tenure is denied. Plus, some people think they are working hard and denial of tenure lets them know they weren’t working as hard as they thought they were. Bad news all around.
people under pressure hey” :(
Appy State? Not a bad part of NC. The skiing is great, the coeds decent and it’s close to Tennessee. It is a liberal college though.
Tenure in the private sector is reserved for union workers, who practically have to kill someone on the job before they are let go.
We have probably all been at or heard of faculty meetings that were probably one step away from homicide. Things get pretty rough in the academy - people take things very personally.
Update: Several other people injured in Alabama college shooting that killed three, Huntsville mayor’s spokesman says - WAFF-TV
I admit this is lost on me.
Ya- Department of Biological Sciences.
I know MamaB, last time I was there was 1978 during the Bill Baxley run for Governor. Hubby’s band played his campaign that summer and we played in Huntsville. I would love to be able to come back for a visit. Huntsville lost it’s sleepy little town status when the big war broke out and they built Redstone and Huntsville Arsenal. We moved there from Lincoln Co., TN, when my chemist Dad was “drafted” to work at the Arsenal. Mom then worked at Redstone packing shells. Boy does that seem like a lifetime ago. I guess it was.
